I keep seeing trailers for this all over the place. I want to play it and I really want it to be good, but I've heard that it sucks. I don't wanna spend more than 30 bucks on something that I'm not sure is good or not.
$30!? Well we pay over $100 for any release game here in New Zealand, at that price I'd buy almost any game I had a relevant interest in.

Don't listen to what other people say, rent it, try it and decide for yourself. Do you need other people to make decisions for you?
When I only have enough cash for one game for the next few months, you bet your ass I do.

The multiplayer is shit, terribly unbalanced an the level design is very poor. If you play as a marine in multi, you're dead, because the preditor will lock on and kill you with one hit while they take 50 rounds from your gun. Aliens will drop down and one shot you from behind AS will preditors.
Did you ever stop to think maybe you're just not using the Marin correctly, I have won matches as them and as far as level design goes, I think this game goes with a more unique appraoch rather then the typical Halo types of maps.

It's actually quite balanced, for example the Aliens have no choice but to get in close, if you're a Marine and don't get them with ranged weaponry then you may find yourself having to block their attacks and fall back. Yes, the instant kill attacks can be blocked if you do it right.

And the Predators don't take 50 rounds, I didn't even empty a clip when I killed my first one, chalk that up to accuracy, not unbalanced gameplay.

Fair enough, I hope that tends to work in your favor then :)

The control is clunky and irregular. The game (on PC anyway) is prone to screen tearing, frame stutter, and out and out freezing. The graphics are okay, but nothing to write home about. The alien has a block button.

I'll just repeat that for you.

The ALIEN has a BLOCK BUTTON.

The idea being that, in melee combat, you have a weak and strong attack. You can block a weak attack to set up a counter, or break a block with a strong attack, or hit someone who's using a strong attack with a weak attack. That is all you need to know about combat as one of the aliens/predators. Does it sound fun? Trust me, it's less fun than it sounds like.

The aliens attack speed is very slow, and doesn't do nearly enough damage. Are you ready to have to hit a human several times with your strong attack to kill him? The Predator has one vision mode and spends pretty much all his time using just wristblades. I haven't played the human yet, but I'm pretty sure I can guess how it goes.

The single player campaigns are very, very short. Especially the alien. I beat it in under two hours. You also don't even see a predator during the alien campaign until the very end.

So in short, yeah, I'm really disappointed. The original AvP was much better, and AvP2 is still the best of the lot.

You're wrong. They have night vision, thermal and what we would call standard vision, sounds like you didn't even try to play the game properly. Also the weapon thing is up to the player, not the game.

You rage quitted due to one instant death kill, you don't play a lot of games then?

I always like when people call me out like I've never played a first person shooter before. During the multiplayer I unloaded an entire clip into a cloaked preditor, I know I was hitting him because there was blood spraying out of him. Seconds later I shot at another one and I instantly died in one hit to his lockon attack which, as the other players were laughing about is ridiculously over powered.

The game isn't balanced when the preditor takes a point blank shot with a shotgun, then kills me with a one shot hit. I'm not sure if it was just the multiplayer demo or what, but the game was had balancing issues and everyone in the game was agreeing, especially the guy with the preditor lock on shot since they were laughing their ass off.

I never said you haven't played a shooter before. So you're basing it solely off the demo? That might be the problem, I only played the demo a little bit.

I never found the Predators to be able to soak up that much damage, I mostly use the Marine actually.

Don't get me wrong, I wanted to like it but after the demo I'm waiting for a price drop. I loved AvP 1 and 2, I'm just ...being cautious with my money. I wouldn't buy the game on multiplayer anyway, I'd want a good single player experience like AvP, nothing was scarier than going down the halls when you know a preditor could be right there, watching you and aiming that little bastard gun

I'm still waiting for the UK copy to arrive, as we've not been given the chance yet to review the sucker. The ratings are all over the place, though. They're going from a nine out of ten to a five out of ten.

I would be able to tell you, as I have it pre-ordered, but for some reason my city is the only one in Canada that hasn't fucking gotten it yet.

But from the Demo, it is kick ass, I loved it, loved playing with friends, absolutely no gripes (withholding the lack of content in said demo).

Well, I'll admit that I only made it through three levels of the predator missions. Three of six, so I'm at the halfway point, and all I have is thermal. I suppose I'll find the other vision modes later, but to be honest, I didn't expect to have to find my vision modes. What the hell?

The weapon thing is only up to the player insomuch as energy holds out. When one charged up shot of the plasmacaster uses more than half my energy, and the average group of marines consists of four to seven, it's clear that I'm supposed to be mostly using the wristblades to see the grab move that they're apparently so damn proud of.

Also, while I'm ranting on the predator, the distract option is stupid, though I can see why they felt they had to put it in for a mostly melee class.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that you like the game. But I'm disappointed by it, highly. Rebellion themselves made an infinitely better product ten years ago, and AvP2 is still one of my favorite games. This game, I'll play through every campaign once, and unless something really jumps out that amazes me, I doubt I'll be playing it again.

Waste of money.

- J

EDIT: Let me add in, for vision, all I have is thermal and standard. I re-read your reply and found that you were counting standard mode as a one of the special vision types. Standard is not a special vision type. Hence the name "standard". Frankly, Predators shouldn't have that anyway, but the art director would cry if they didn't put it in, so I allow it. What happened to electrical and predtech anyway?
