I... don't know. I was far too bothered by the camera and controls to be able to submerge myself into the game itself. I remember spending the first (and only) hour trying to tweak the controls, display and generally getting annoyed by the cumbersome camera, then I got a BSoD... Worst game I ever had the misfortune of playing.

Edit: However, from what little I actually played, I got the feeling the game would've benefited from not tossing the monsters right into your face. Having you walk around in dark, noisy rooms for a while before even getting to see the baddies would've been more scary than having them right in front of you the whole time, screaming and writhing.

It was very tense.

And there were a few bits that scared the bejeezus out of me...

Being chased by the unkillable regenerating Necromorph

The section of the ship with the flaming engines.

The scream you hear when you're in the elevator.

The trip onto the crashed ship.

Man, Dead Space is just awesome.

It had a couple jump moments (the end and the tentacle) but unfortunately a second time through all fear goes away from the scripted moments.

No, not really. Granted, I didn't see all of it but from what I did see, I didn't find it to be that scary.

I found it very predictable, You can just basicly know when something is standing behind you cause they repeat the same trick a 100 times, I jumped up every now and then though but it wasn't scary, Proper game though. Not worth the budget price in my opinion

I was scared the first time I played the game, but that might be due to the fact that I was closed inside a steel box with surround sound. It really improved the mood of the game. Then I came home with the game, and it wasn't as scary... Still slightly creepy, but not scary.

It was tense. It gave a good sense of gaming peril, but inevitably i can't find anything artificial truly scary because i consider fear to be tantamount to feeling of personal threat.

play this game in the middle of the night, all lights off, and with surround sound([small]i played it like this about 95% of the time[/small])
then at times it would be scary, but more often to not it would just startle me when i play
except for at the end, nearly shat my pants....

Scary on impossible mode until I got good at the game again after months of not playing.

Scariest moment in the game was when I though the game froze after defeating a boss without taking any damage or wasting any ammo (as in my accuracy was like 96%).
