I got bored before the end of the first disc and never played it again. It was clearly someone's baby, because I was overloaded with information, characters, weapons systems, jebus I couldn't keep up and didn't really try to cause I was bored.

I found it agonisingly slow moving and obtuse.
Now your being acute.

I started with FFX and FF Tactics Advance, and those were both great games in my opinion. So, as with a lot of other people here, I decided to check out FFVII because everyone was so hyped about it. It never grew on me either. The characters and the story are compelling enough, at least from what I've read on the internet, since I never finished the game. I never even got past disk one, it was just too slow-paced in my opinion. It might have been different if FVII had been my first FFVII experience though. As it stands, I can't bring myself to play it to the end when there are so many other great games out there. I also tried FFXII, and that one had the same effect on me as FVII. It was okay, but I got bored with it after a couple of hours of gameplay. Never got sucked into the game, as was the case with FFX and Tactics Advance.

This thread is nor full of win. It is a guaranteed fact that some people won't like a game, anytime, anywhere. The reason FFVII was a winner is because it took a very popular gaming niche and turned it 3d (sort of) and pushed it ahead of it's current state.

If you told me to look at it from a purely objective piont of view i'd say that it was either average or slightly above.
however I think for the type of peeps who liek JRPGs and te such there was something about it which I can't put my fingeer on that made it more than the some of it's components.

My friend was saying it was an a amazing game so I borrowed and I have to say I rather enjoyed it. It was nothing spectacular but hell it kept my attention for a good week or so and I liked the system very much. The only final fantasy Ive liked I have to say and Ive played 9, 10 and Tactics.

Any 25-hour game I bother to finish three times has to do something right. So yeah, it might not be the best game or RPG ever made, and if you don't like JRPG's this probably isn't going to change your mind, but it's still a damn good game.

I loved it at the time, though I don't know if I'd have the patience to play through the entire game again. I definitely enjoyed it a lot more than any of the FF games since, with the possible exception of FF Tactics for the PSX.
It's easy to look back at any 12 year old game and say the graphics were lame, but at the time it was considered cutting edge, especially the FMVs. Nothing else even came close. Compare it to a game like Wild Arms, which before FFVII was arguably one of the most popular internationally released RPGs for the PSX.
And perhaps most important of all, FFVII was the first massively successful console RPG outside of Japan, and is credited as being the title most responsible for making console RPGs a viable and lucrative industry worldwide.

FFX wasnt a patch on VI. VI had some of the best written characters ever, and the Aerith scene (you know the one) is the only time i have ever cried over a game, and I NEVER cry. ( i was about 12 at the time, i feel i need to save some face any back to OT) Seiphiroth had to be the best bad guy ever, he was sadistic, arrogent, bitter but you could never bring yourself to hate him completely since he was really only trying to get revenge. And the whole storyline is sheer gold like it starts off small and balloons even taking it into space without ever making it seem like they were just doing it cause they could. And every char had a backstory , a proper one that was investigated and concluded like when Red XIII finds out the truth about his father, or Barrets confrontation in the desert even the optional characters vicent and Yuffiee. And the dialouge some of it is priceless, Barret is funny throughout. Even the plot twists were pulled off with finesse Liek when cloud sinks in the lifestream and remembers the truth. Gameplay was fun too battles were challenging and i liked the materia system. Thougth the random encounters were a lil frequent. And it gave us teh hardest bosses that ever occured emerald weapon anybody? Great story, loveable chars, fun game, fun minigames, factor in this came out years before its time. FFX was good, but it was only good, the areas it wasnt great in it was competent in and the sphere setup my favourite leveling method to date, but it ws not on par with VII.

It broke ground in a lot of ways but had its shortfalls. It really doesn't matter now though, because these days trying to play early 3D games, no matter how good, is a rather grating experience. If you can handle that, you can handle the much more comprehensible Final Fantasy VI, which really put the narrative in RPGs.

I just don't see what it has on FFX or Legend of Dragoon.
I just don't see why you are comparing it to games that came out three and a half and five years later...

for its time it was a good, not great, rpg but by now i see it as more of an annoyance rather than entertaining. I think we have all moved on from the days of random encounters.

VI is still my favourite but I liked VII mainly the characters though as you can tell.

You could say why you liked it Akai, that was the point of the thread :p

Yeah, AngryMan, I think Final Fantasy (7+) is sort of like Silent Hill and (if they worked like they were supposed to) Visual Novels, that they're more for the story than the game. Final Fantasy X is in my opinion the best story ever written for gaming, but then, that's just my opinion, others may disagree.
I'm going to go ahead and assume you played X first then VII afterwards yes?

Why am I being reported exactly? I don't hate Final Fantasy, I am wondering why it is so loved. I'm asking for a critical analysis of the game, and compare my experiences with that analysis, I'm not launching a hate speech on it. It's a gaming discussion forum and I think this counts as gaming discussion, point it out to me in the rules where I can't do this.
I understand completely.
But on the internet, asking for a 'critical analysis' basically equals inviting trolls over to have a bashing party.
I don't like HL² myself, but I refrain from making threads because people would probably try and burn me alive for it. I'm hoping that this thread gets locked (or just dies down) before the big trolls arrive...

Isn't there a thread about this like, every month or so?

At any rate, to be on-topic: I agree it's a bit overrated, but it's an enjoyable game nonetheless if it's your kind of thing to tinker with your character setups. Apparently more people are than there aren't, and OP belongs to the latter, I suppose.
The story is god-awful, in retrospect, but I just started playing it through a third time on my PSP. And I'm STILL enjoying it, over 10 years after the first time I played it.

Final Fantasy VII is a great game. Good story (although with pretty badly translated dialog at times), excellent battle and magic system, beautiful battle cinematics, and it has a lot of cool mini-games and extras on the side.

I don't see an option for this in the poll, though, so I'm not voting.

FF VII is an amazing game to JRPG fans for the same reason Halo is an amazing game to FPS fans: personal opinion. You don't like it? Congratulations! Go play something else.

Clearly enough people like it to make it popular over 10 years after it's release. Is it the best game ever? No. But chances are, if you like RPGs you'll hold FF7 in high regard.
