OK so I have this issue I need to get out in the open. Basically I want to know who likes and dislikes the movie Sucker Punch and why you think that way. The reason for this is that when I saw it with my friends I noticed that we all kind of thought differently about it. I'm talking very different opinions which I thought was odd as that rarely, if every, happens.

So my opinion first, well I thought it was amazing. I loved the idea behind it and thought the filmography was really awe inspiring. The effects were pretty cool as well and I really liked the action scenes. Most of all though I liked the music, I am listening to the soundtrack right now and it's safe to say at least 6 of the 9 songs from the movie are in my current top 25 so that is saying something. As for my friends one of them thought it was not too bad, one thought it was pretty average, and the other really hated it.

But the funny thing is that my sister also saw it and thought it was awesome. Anyway I just really wanted to get some feedback so anything you want to say on the topic I'd love to hear. Also the main reason for the most negative review (from my friends) was that it was completely unrealistic which I thought was an odd reason as expecting the group fantasies of mentally unstable people to be realistic to me seems a bit odd.

Edit: Having a bit of trouble with the poll am quite new to this they obviously don't like to be changed much. Will try to work it out soon. Sorry for that.

I don't have time for a long, argument filled review right now, but the movie was fantastic from start to finish. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it and probably the best action oriented film I have seen since The Dark Knight.

I came for the masturbatory fantasy and lo did I receive it.

But at the same time I also received large amounts of guilt for having such a masturbatory fantasy...

Well played Mr. Snyder.

Honestly I haven't considered it deeply enough to give you a full answer. What I can say is that the ending was absolutely terrible (almost needlessly and purposely so) and, regardless of the artiest's intent, that fact alone was enough to make me completely apathetic to even considering any deeper significance the film might have had. On a surface level, the movie was a mediocre action flick made entertaining by exploiting niche appeal.

CGI = off the wall.
Everything else = ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Whenever a relatively unknown director springs to fame (Zack Snyder, Joe Carnahan, the Donnie Darko guy), studios give them heaps of cash to do whatever the fuck they want, and the ensuing product normally turns out to be a good-looking piece of shit, with big name stars in bland roles (ie Smokin' Aces, Southland Tales). 300 was the exception as that was quite awesome and well received for Snyder, but Sucker Punch has again proven this theory right. It's a beautiful-looking film but the story is ridiculous and a whole bunch of talent are given mundane or bad roles.

I had every reason to like it, yet all I could think was 'meeehh'. Strange, because I wanted to like it.

Hmm, I suppose I can see where you are coming from. But when I watched it I always thought about how their physical battles in their dreamlike state represented their battles with themselves for control of their bodies that doesn't come easily to people with mental illnesses (not that I am an expert just from my mediocre at best understanding) and are paralleled in the real world with their attempts to steal each of the items meaning that if they failed in their battle in the dreamlike state it would be reflected by lobotomisation or even murder in the real world.

Honestly I liked the ending because when she said that Sweatpea was the only one who really had a chance it kind of made sense to me. As all the others seem to have reasons for being inside the mental hospital due to some mental instability, even the main character, even if she is not mentally ill there would be some definite emotional trauma caused by what happened. However it is mentioned in the movie that Sweatpea wasn't forced into the situation but rather followed her sister when she ran away from home and therefore it would make sense that she is the only one that would stand a chance in the real world as she is the only one who is truely mentally stable.

And then there is the bus driver who acts kind of like a narrator in the sense that he controls the story and it was a shock to me in the end to find out that he was always intending for Sweatpea to be saved not Baby Doll. I don't know maybe I'm reading way to much into this but if you can kind of see where I'm coming from maybe you could re-think some of your understanding of the film. That being said the "dumb action" bits of it were really awesome and I did enjoy them haha.

Holy FUCK no.

The brief action scenes, while indeed crazy and probably would have made fuckawesome B-movies on their own, didn't help because they pull you out of the rest of it (which you aren't very deep into anyway).

The rest of the film is more or less "hey, you know what One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest needed? Fetishism and shitty music."

Subjectivity will always play it's hand in this, but I'm still going to be the bad guy here and say it was a terrible movie. Everything about it was one-note: flat characters, flat story, flat narrative. The action scenes were impressive, sure, but within the context of the film they were pretty much worthless. I didn't care for any of the characters actually fighting, and considering I knew they were all in a dreamlike state anyway, there was no real tension. If they fail, so what? They don't die at all. Tack on an astonishingly mediocre ending that tried to give depth and completely fail because all characters involved were shallow vessels to be used in the next big action scene, and I was completely underwhelmed by it.

If you love it for being a big, dumb action flick, more power to you. I just couldn't stand it and found it overall boring and lacking in so many key areas.
Pretty much what this guy said, although I'll be fair to the film and point out that the action scenes are supposed to stand for the various stunts they're pulling, and that they totally DO die during a couple of them. A bigger problem is that they aren't really metaphors for anything in particular, since the scenes have little connection to the actual caper and NO connection whatsoever to the whole dancing thing.

I ended up reviewing it. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.279484-Sucker-Punch-A-Riobux-View#10907147] Hint hint, nudge nudge.

Personally, it's a film that works for those who don't care about plot, or care about plot enough to go through all the symbolism.

Thanks for that it was quite interesting, I agree with pretty much everything you said. I get how a combination of way to much and not enough can cause some people to pass it off as not worthy of much thought.

I loved it and all of my friends loved it, but I can see why some people wouldn't. It is quite a polarising film - I haven't heard a lot of people say it was ok, or just average, but I have heard a lot of people going "OMG THAT WAS AWESOME" and probably just as many going "OMG THAT WAS SHIT." I will say that it isn't as good the second time around (though still not bad) - I went to see it again with a friend who hadn't seen it yet, and while I wasn't bored I didn't get anywhere near as into it as I did the first time.

Yeah, you may just wanna add a spoiler warning onto that... I mean, the majority of people that come in here are most likely going to have already seen it, but there may be a few people who see the thread and think "I might just read that to help me decide if I'm gonna watch it or not" and you pretty well covered all of the surprises... Other than that, I agree with what you said.
