If it had been a genuine homophobic incident, a fine of $100,000 would be hugely excessive. As it stands, he's being fined the price of an expensive car or perhaps a small flat. For swearing. It's absurd.

Then tell me exactly what you mean when you call someone a fag, and why you think that the word is offensive when you use it to insult someone.

When I call someone a shit, I am implying that they are like feces, when I call someone a bastard, I am implying that their parents were unmarried and that it had a negative upbringing on their childhood turning them into an unlikable douchebag. Heck, when I call someone a douchebag I am implying that they have shared traits with a bag that contains the waste after a woman has washed her vagina.

If you can't tell me exactly what you mean when you use a word, then you aren't thinking about what you're saying, and as if I should even have to try and teach such basic primary school moralising to someone who I presume is either an adult or near enough:

'If you don't know what the word you're saying means, maybe you should find out before using it.'

I would add, 'if you can't think of anything nice to say, don't say nothin' at all' but I think most people in this thread seem to be beyond that.

And I apologise for assuming that I knew what you were thinking when you used a word, obviously you don't think at all when you use it, which to my mind is infinitely more dangerous.

He's on an annual salary of over 20 million dollars. I don't think he'll miss it.

It always pisses me off to see these overpaid 'pro' sportsmen raging at refereeing decisions. That's part of the game, and they're getting paid well enough to act like professionals, not spoiled brats. It's appalling the level of loutish behaviour that masses of people will make excuses for if the person concerned is good at a sport.

Reminds me of when they tried to ban The Fairytale of New York for the use of the word "******".

Forgetting, of course, that it's a verbal tirade used on her husband.

And that "Fairy" is another putdown for homosexual...but that wasn't as bad.

And what do they think about this?

If we're going to go the whole hog and ban certain words because of who they might offend, can we at least have a list of what ones? Because the word "spastic" is used an awful lot by Americans...

Equally, the "coonskin cap" means a VERY different thing over here.

I think it's an over reaction on all parts. Basketball is a silly game that giant men play and inexplicably get paid too much for,
You act as if the basketball players choose how much they get paid. They have no control over how much they get paid other than signing a contract. The amount of revenue that the NBA generates from TV broadcasts and such determines their money, so using that as criticism for professional sports/basketball is just stupid.

Have you ever played a sport? Have you ever gotten a call that you didn't like? If so, take the angry feeling you get when you think it was unfair, and amplify that by 10,000.
Professional sports players don't play it part time just to enjoy themselves a little bit. Professional sports is a full time job that requires ludicrous amounts of time, effort, and dedication in order to be good enough. These players see losing a game as a horrible thing, as well they should. If they aren't competitive, then there isn't a real reason for the NBA to be around.

I don't think him being on tv has anything to do with it. He insulted the ref. The ref didn't really need to fine Bryant, but if someone called me that, I'd do something about.

Yea, he should be fined. He signed a contract, was supposed to be abiding by rules, and he broke it. So he gets a fine and slap on the wrist. On the topic of people being offended, you need to grow up. People are gunna say whatever the eff they want, regardless of what you think. Like somebody earlier in this thread said: Get thicker skin or go live in a cave.

So just because advertisers pay a lot and they charge a bunch for tickets it means I can't think they're overpaid? Bull crap. Sure, pro athletes work very hard to be good at their sport, but do they deserve salaries of millions of dollars? I hardly think so. I have a hard time rewarding people for spending their time playing silly games for other people's entertainment.
