Every Mayan calendar was cyclic, and the turn of a cycle meant a time of change. The long count (turning in 2012), is just the longest of those.

Y2K was supposed to stop all computers because people thought they'd think it was 1900 when no PC's existed and would shut down. A computer would just think instead of 99 it was 00 and wouldn't care.

12/12/2012 is based on the ancient Mayan's who did know a lot about astrology, but that is about as far as it goes. 12/12/2012 will be just like 6/6/2006 another meaningless number day I'll probably waste on video games.

12/12/2012 is actually the date which the Mayan's stopped their calendars and predicted (quite accurately) that there would be some awesome planet alignment thing going on . I fail to see how so many people have concluded that they were implying the end of the world. Maybe they just used that alignment as a landmark and said, "Bah, we'll finish the rest of this calendar when we get to it".

People are dumb, 2012 is just another day with lots of misconceptions etc. I bet no one realized that there was an asteroid that recently passed earth that fairly close, that wasn't noticed until it was passing. I plan to be home playing a game or drawing on that day, pretty much what I do every day.
