It suits games like STALKER well, when it's you, alone, struggling to survive against a hostile and inhospitable world (although the weapons degraded far too fast in Clear Sky for my liking, it acts as a valve to release all that money clogging one's pocket's late-game)

Guns shouldn't degenerate at all. What are guns made for? Shooting lots of bullets really fast last time I checked. So why do they suddenly stop in the middle of a firefight? The guns in Section 8 seem to jam an awful lot more than real guns.
Guns can overheat, jam because of residue clogging parts, have the barrel worn down by continuous firing etc. They're in some cases quite fragile, but i've never played Section 8 so perhaps they had it at something ridiculous like the gun exploding after 8 shots or something.

I dont like it when games make weapons degrade very fast. So after working for hours on getting that cool sword I wanted and it break when I bonk an enemy on the head.

I just find it annoying. Seriously, I cannot imagine playing a game and thinking, I've been using this weapon for ages, it should be broken by now.

It's pointless and irritating. Sorry, most weapons do not break after being used four or five times.

I liked the weapon jamming system in Far Cry 2. I liked that you had to unjam your weapon in the heat of battle. T'was cool.

I'm against it. When a 2x4 board breaks after smashing a couple of zombies over the head, it makes sense. Not so in the majority of games, where you fight with swords and guns made of steel. Especially if they're fresh out of a storage.

if its Done Right, sometimes they add it to games that Really dont need it
silent hill origins? but some do it ridiculously short times before they break. but with far cry 2 they did it well. but I doont really like degredeition because then it is less fun.
Fallout 3, and System Shock 2 are both ones i thought did it well, for Diferent reasons

It works perfectly in survival games.
It works in RPG games assuming once the wapon hits rock bottom it can still be restored.

Depends on how easily they break, and how hard they are to fix.

If they can't be fixed easily or at all, then NO.

I dislike it, but if it the rest of the game is good, I don't mind too much. Although, if weapon degradation suddenly applies to your fists as well.....

The only game I actually liked the weapon degradation was Far Cry 2, Especially when a sniper rifle barrel explodes and falls off.
That never happened to me, because as soon as I could afford guns, extra containers, manuals and all I forgot all about all the rusty guns the NPCs were toating around. After every single mission the first thing I did was take a jeep ride to the nearest gun dealer shack, throw the "old" guns on the floor of the weapons room and pick up brand new ones off of the walls. And while I was at it, I picked up ammo.

The only NPC gun that I carried around for a while was the AR-15, because I loved that gun from the moment I picked it up. However, once it started consistently jamming up on me I threw that piece of rust-pipe away and continued soldiering on until I could finally buy the same gun from the gun dealer shack.

If done right, it can add a whole new level of depth. However, it's one of those things that can easily be messed up.

Just another annoying thing to worry about.
I have Fallout 3 GOTY, I played through all of Operation Anchorage, loved it, and I got my Chinese Stealth Armor...

But now I have to find Recon Armor every twenty minutes to repair it, and I don't even take barely any damage, I'm invisible the whole time...

I am for, it all depends on the game though. I do think it added more depth to Farcry 2 though, I would like to see it more often.

Far Cry 2 was a shining example of how not to do the degradation system.

5 magazines breaks a gun?
The fricken dart gun was horrible. It was quiet and did lots of damage, but rusty after ten shots? That's bull crap.

I don't really hate it, but I honestly don't like it either. If I had to choose I'd like ALL future games to NOT have this mechanic.
