Lets take a real life example. I live in Holland my whole life, since I was born weed has been legally available at every corner of the street. Weed in Holland has been made legal in the 1970?s from that moment on we had a huge drop in hard drug users.

I can't believe so many people in here think cannabis smoking is a physiologically addictive. It's not at all, alcohol is and withdrawal can kill you (delirium tremens is terrifying) but withdrawal from cannabis through a psychological addiction can at worst can cause nausea, paranoia, anxiety and aggression.

Well it is illegal to use comparative word "then"

More then
Less then, NO NO NO

Its
More than
Less than

Or am I wrong? (english not my primary)

But to the subject, I could not care less. I basicly approve this, but it is always drug anyways. It's like removing age limits to drink. I don't think legalizing ganja would improve any society. People are stupid and would ruin their health more and more.

Either make cannabis as legal as alcohol and tobacco, or make alcohol and tobacco as illegal as cannabis.

This would include all applicable laws (regarding the sale and consumption of all alcohol, cannabis and tobacco) being consistent with each other.

I don't wanna live in a world of stoners, but it's getting there eventually and alcohol is already a spread and commonly accepted drug despite everything. So yeah, I don't really care since either way we'll probably end up at the same place. Optimistically speaking there's a slight chance making it all legal prevents people from getting it for the cool-because-forbidden factor, but I wouldn't ground any decision on that.

I dont care. I dont smoke it and it will make all the potheads happy if they legalise it so they can stop trying to sound intelligent by saying that theres no negative effects (when there is)

There hasn't been a single marijuana overdose in the history of mankind.

I like to see Marijuana as the reverse of Caffeine.

Yeah, it's still a drug, but so is smoking and alcohol. And in comparison, Marijuana is less addictive than drinking!

I vote keep it illegal. I don't want more 'stoners' driving.
I take it you are in favor of making alcohol completely illegal, then?
Obviously I'f you were going to legalise marijuana, you'd still make it illegal to drive while under it's influence, also I'm pretty sure alcohol related deaths would make up a much bigger part of the death toll.

A few days ago the police stopped me and took my fingerprints and everything for two hours because I had 0.9 grams netto of cannabis and 5 seeds with me. I thought it was a complete waste of time, they thought so and only the legislator doesn't think so. Now the attorney and the drivers license agency have a few hours more to work from tax money. Yay.
People from 100 years ago and hopefully from 20 years in the future could only laugh about this piece of real-life comedy. Prosecuted for the posession of a minimal amount of an agricultural crop.

I don't think cannabis is in any way good for you ... but then neither are several legal drugs. It's more rapidly harmful, and random, than alcohol or nicotine, but there are enough examples of people who are perfectly fine having an occasional toke.

However, my sentiment is being swayed towards "legalise" purely on the basis of the finding that indoor grow-lamps are responsible for about 1% of the electricity use of the USA and other countries with a similar level of illegal use.

Make it A-OK to grow the stuff outside or in transparent greenhouses - save a fairly significant amount of energy and CO2. Plus stoners are less economically active, drive less and do so more slowly and economically. They do eat a bit more, but on the whole it's further environmental benefit. Screw the sociological effects. Just means more jobs for the earnest unemployed who can't get even a basic wageslave job for being "overqualified" once their own market segment is saturated.

This is just an honest question - I'm curious how many people on Escapist are for weed legalization and how many are against it. Feel free to give reasons why you feel the way you do, but let's keep it civil.

Personally, I am for it. Smoking weed is like smoking tobacco (which is perfectly legal), granted that the chances of lung problems and cancer are much higher with marijuana then tobacco. Smoking weed is also much more dangerous, in my opinion, than drinking (which is perfectly legal). More people have died from drunk driving and drinking-related things than from getting high on weed. Again, this is just my opinion and how I feel.
I think you mean to say "smoking weed is much less dangerous" than drinking; in which case, I concur.

I wish they would be allowed to test marijuana more fully, in particular drug/drug reactions with it. I wish I could smoke it but it generally has the effect of making me pass out/faint and drops my blood pressure frightfully low. :D (This is more likely a result of a drug interaction from various medications I'm on, though, and not marijuana on its own. Though I have heard of episodes of syncope from smoking pot alone I assume they're pretty rare.)

So... yeah. Other than the orthostatic hypotension I think it's a potentially very safe drug.

Is this a fact? Where are you getting this from?
The dangers of Marijuana? The smoke you inhale. But guess what? You don't actually HAVE to smoke it. It can therefore be completely safe. You won't get liver disease and you won't get lung cancer.
Smoking weed is also much more dangerous, in my opinion, than drinking (which is perfectly legal).
WHAT? How is it more dangerous? It is again, in no way dangerous. Unless ofcourse youre taking into account what can happen if you were to say, drive while under the effects of it but thats just dumb.

EDIT: Also, this.

i dont really care either way since i dont smoke anything. but i cant see how weed and i mean proper weed that hasnt be laced with something nasty is any more dangerous that cigerettes or beer etc.

i think they should legalise it like tobaco. so it can be taxed etc.

I live in Holland, where it's legal to smoke pot if you're 0ver 18. It works out pretty well. Making it legal removes some of the charm it has to young people. Now it's a bit like alcohol, as in, use it if you want, but face the consequenses.
