I was put off the format when Sony ditched the shuttered-cases. It would have made them slightly more expensive to produce, but they would not have suffered from dust & scratches - think 3.5" floppy disk, only larger. Shame.
ok what is a shuttered case? if you mean the old cartridge style things pcs back in the early 90s used to use, they were horrid

as for dust, i've never had dust affect ANY dvd/cd disc i've used, finger prints and such on the disc cause more of an issue than dust and scratches only happen if you're really careless with your discs, i have a stack of them next to my tv and no cases and they're fine
I guess they mean a disk drive?

Blu-ray is the ultimate in HD movie entertainment. Enough said. But seriously, if you have the set up for it, Blu-ray is the best way to go for showing off your setup. Amazing picture quality, and near lossless sound make it one of the best movie experiences ever. My dad has an amazing hometheater, and with blu-ray his setup blows even the movie theater out of the water.

thats because HD-DVD was Blu-rays direct competition, like betamax vs VHS. Very similar formats made to do the same thing.

I've watched Blu-Ray. yes, it looks better, but who cares? what's the point of paying another 150 dollars for one when they are still making DVDs? I'm not one until they nearly stop making DVDs.

Movies look pretty neat in HD resolutions. Really, it's a real leap forward in terms of picture quality - it's not the same effect as the transition from VHS to DVD, but quite similar.

Nevertheless, it's not worth the money - BluRay players are still pretty expensive compared to DVD players, and to experience any notable differences, you need to have an HD-capable TV - which really costs shitloads of money.

Someday, I'll want to go buy the hardware, but right now, I'll settle with DVDs. By the way, HD-DVD was the better format, what with the omission of region codes and DRM. It's sad, really.

Blu-Ray is the future. There was a recent article on Wired.com about 400GB Blu-Ray discs coming out around 2010.

To be brutally honest, Blu-ray is an unnecessary format. Higher picture quality for sure, but you're not going to get the shits watching a DVD because they're not 1080p.
ummm they ARE 1080p at least the ones i own are and my tv reports 1080p when they play. not really sure where you're getting your information from but it's wrong

Eh blu ray, I personally don't need it as I just use digital distribution for everything.

My opinion of Blu-ray is that of Yahtzee. I've never really been one to say, "Well I really wish the resolution was better so I could improve my movie-watching experience".

Xbox 360 > Playstation 3. Xbox 360 + NetFlix > Bluray.

Get an Xbox 360.
I've already got a 360 and a Wii. I'm completing the trio...

I'm obviously not going to be just playing movies on my PS3. I'll be doing plenty of gaming. My movie watching experience will only be raised with the addition of a few blu ray flicks like The Dark Knight. I'm not ditching DVD until it's officially dead. Besides, they don't make EVERYTHING I would wanna watch in Blu Ray...

I don't understand hi-def. I just don't. I've tried, but maybe it's because I've decided I don't need to see individual pores on a person's face while watching TV that I haven't adopted the concept.

Also there's the fact that if I was going to get a PS3 it'd be for playing games and not watching movies I could get on DVD anyway, since that's still a viable media, but that's another can of worms i won't open this time

Of course I'm also hoping I can just wait out this format generation war and move onto the next one.

When more people get HDTV's, Blu-Ray will take off (as well as HD content in general).

For the moment, it's a luxury.

In my opinion, the PS3 as a gaming console really failed to compare to Xbox 360. Unless you _really_ want to play Metal Gear Solid 4, I suggest against letting go of $400 American. You can do more with them than buy a PS3. The best games for the PS3 are also released for the Xbox 360, which has a superior interface and online capability. Finding games is easier, playing music while gaming is supported by default, updates take much less time to implement and more people are always online on the 360 than on the PS3.

Since NetFlix allows you to rent and download movies in HD, I see very little point in shelling out for the PS3 or any BluRay player, for that matter.

---

This is a whole other argument: better resolution is always welcome, but not when I have to witness a media craze and buy a new player for it, especially when what I already have isn't all that bad. I never once complained that I couldn't see something on DVD because the image was too fuzzy. With a visually perfectionist mentality I'd never be quite satisfied until a device was made that produced images that are as good as the eye can see. I wouldn't enjoy most movies since I'd be fretting over small, menial details.

Shit, how about the BluRay hype calms down and we all just, I'unno, read a book?

Blu-Ray is legendary. The greatest two hours of my life have been spent watching Iron Man in Blu-Ray.

Well i'm still getting a PS3 either way. There are games I wanna play that aren't coming to the 360. The exclusives they still have and the new stuff they have been getting sounds good to me. I guess i'm just REALLY tired of my 360...

You think DVDs are 1080p?

Wow... that's just... wow.

I'll give you this opportunity to re-read the post and rescind your snide remark.
