In my opinion if I notice it immediately, then she is wearing too much. Subtlety is key in make up. I prefer to not be able to tell unless I actively try to tell.

Make-up looks great, until I can notice it. Which girls have become adept at applying.

Make-up is good to hide small imperfections that can hinder confidence. It hilights features from passable to noticeable or stunning. It can also help affirm your style.

It's a tool and an ornament as much as jewelry or clothing, and should be used likewise.

Those girls who walk around with orange faces, thirty layers of foundation and so much eyeliner they look like they've not slept in four days? They don't look very nice at all.
I agree on the first part, but I like girls that look like panda. :)

You have fine, fine taste, sir!

I like make-up as long as girls are sensible about it, but I do like heavy black eye make-up. I had a girlfriend a while back who never wore make-up except on nights out when she'd put on thick black eyeliner and mascara and she looked gorgeous

It all depends on the girl which is using it I think,s ome girls look nice enough to not need or want make -up and some just do it because they want to, so I would put myself on the dont care either way section.

It's good on some girls, other times it looks bad, I really think any woman can look good in make up if they do it right o.o

I like lipstick. Other than that I hardly use it, but it doesn't really matter to me if other people do. For me it makes people look neither more or less attractive, really.

Just as long as they don't put too much on

Other than that, it depends on the person. Some people look better without makeup, some look better with makeup. It all depends on the individual.

i always wear make-up. usually just mascara and eyeliner if i can help it, but that's just the last year or so. i used to love experimenting with eye shadows as well.

when i walk down a busy shopping street i see more women that could benefit from a little mascara at least instead of the natural thing they got going, than i see women with hideous make-up (thick cake foundation in a shade too dark, pale lips with dark lip liner, horribly painted eyebrows, too much blush, etc.)

so yeah i'm all for women wearing make-up.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter a whole lot. I prefer the natural look but I must admit, my ex-wife looked amazing when she put on makeup. She took a minimal approach which worked very well and I liked it. When makeup is caked on so thick I can see it from the other side of the street, I'm highly turned off by it.

Part of the problem, which you touched on, is that most guys don't even recognize what's make up and what's not. Often times the women they think are the most stunning because they don't wear much or any at all are typically the women that wear tons but in "the right way."

My basic idea is (and I think this option is missing from your poll... and I would BEG you to add it because I think it is a very viable option... more viable than any of your other choices) that women should wear make up appropriate for themselves and not follow a trend or overarching guideline that may needlessly apply to them (Read: eyeliner and eyeshadow are NOT always a necessity, no matter who you are... hell, some women should stay away from it entirely - or at the very least recognize that their eyes look better without having black gunk built up around the edges).

For example, my girl friend HONESTLY only wears eye liner (occasionally some of that cover up stuff for blemishes, but more or less just eye liner). and it's AMAZING. But that's because she has an AWESOME complexion. For example, people constantly ask her what type of eye shadow she wears, when in reality her natural complexion offers a PERFECT, slightly darker shade around her eyes. All the eye liner does is bring that out more with the contrast of her gorgeous brown eyes. Dont' get me started on her cheeks (with natural blush complexion) and lips (a rosy pink) or her (again natural) dark, tanned skin tone. All she needs is eye liner.

And girls should recognize sometimes simplicity is bliss.
To be honest, I don't understand quite what you're getting at when you say that women should wear make up appropriate to themselves. Even with your example, it can be read different ways.

Are you saying they should wear just what they need, ie. cover up when necessary, a little eyeliner for definition or wear what they consider appropriate, whether that be just eyeliner, or something more elaborate?

I have good skin- I take bloody good care of it, although I'm conscious of an area of discolouring, I don't really have anything to hide, so I only wear a small amount of foundation (to even out skin tone, conceal my discolouring). I only use mascara to curl my lashes rather than colour as my lashes are black. I wear lots of bright eyeshadow because I like the colours, I like how it looks, and I think its fun.

I wear what I consider appropriate for me as a person, but I'm wearing more than your girlfriend would in my position because I've opted for bright eyeshadow. Do we both fall under your "wear what is appropriate" option?

I like make-up, in fact I'd love to try my hand at it myself some day, I'm just having trouble finding willing victims participants.

OT: I honestly don't care either way, people do what they feel like doing, the fact that it's not my personal taste means nothing.

Wear it if it suits you. I haven't worn makeup in years - I did the panda thing for my whole highschool career - but then stopped more or less because I'd rather spend that extra ten minutes in bed than stabbing myself in the eye with a pencil every morning. I know most women aren't that clumsy, but my pre-smoke motor control is dangerous.

I'm lucky with my skin though, always have been; I rarely get spots, or blemishes, and my lips are quite big and permenantly a bright, pinky red on their own (I get accused a lot of wearing lipstick when I'm not). Makeup just doesn't suit me, at least not these days.

I'll be honest, though - I wish less women went through their days under the impression that they need it to be confident, or pretty. Fair game if you like it, but it makes me kind of depressed when I read about women who feel they need it.

Being a guy, I like girls with a natural thing, although I pobably prefer that because I have the sexiest natural tan ever. Seriously. Guys compliment me on my tan, thats how great it is. No red "Two weeks abroad" burnt mess, No orange fake tan dont-sit-on-the-sofa rubbish, just pure golden luurrrve.

Ahem.

So yeah, the plain girl is more my thing.

My problem is, a lot of guys don't realise when girls are wearing make up. Guys say that they like girls bare faced, but these girls that are apparently 'bare faced' are actually wearing well applied foundation and mascara.

For example, my male flat mates cannot tell when I am wearing make up unless I put on black eyeliner or lipstick. They have no idea how much foundation or concealer I am wearing at any given time.

I think guys only really notice make up when it's piled on and therefore judge that that is what a girl wearing make up looks like.
