Just posing this question out of curiosity, but when you're playing an RPG in which you get to pick your class, which do you tend to gravitate towards/which is your favorite to play?

Yes yes, I know that there are numerous different classes beyond Fighter, Mage, or Rogue, but really when you boil every class down to it's core elements, it's one of those three: a caster, a rogue, or a warrior. Everything else is essentially a specialized version of one of those three.

Just to be fair, though, I'll go ahead and throw in the "combo-classes" as well in case we have some Magi-Knights or some such out there. :p

So which do you prefer and why do you prefer it?

It depends on the gameplay, but I generally prefer Rangers. Mostly because they tend to be the best at ranged combat.

If we're talking about some kind of D&D-based system, then I would have to go with a Fighter-type class with high persuasive skills/bonuses.

I find that most RPGs reward you greatly for having a high skill at talking people into submission. However, I tend to prefer the direct approach so I need to be able to kill anyone I meet just in case diplomacy fails.

Like I said in my OP, when you boil down every class - in pretty much any kind of RPG - it's essentially a caster, a "thief", or a fighter. But I do agree with you, I usually like having a good deal of points allocated to persuasion/charm. It generally leads to better outcomes in conversations and/or getting access to extra stuff in some cases.

Heh heh, I believe it's Fallout 2 where you can actually convince the main boss' bodyguards to turn against him and kick his ass for you if you have a high enough persuasive skill. :3

Fighter. I don't need tricks or magic, just pure skill and determination see me through every battle.

That's what I've been whenever I play an Elder Scrolls game...granted, I've only played Oblivion and Skyrim, but still, that's my preferred type of class for them.

I love creeping through a dungeon, stealth-critting enemies with one shot. And when I mess up and all hell breaks loose, it's time to bust out the magic and melt some faces off. :3

I like being the backup guy, the guy who stands in the back and doesn't really change the tone of how a battle is going to go out, until I have that one moment where I go huge and get a good kill or damage number on my enemies.

I don't trust games to let me take the back seat of a fight. Either the leading AI is retarded and makes poor decisions, or the AI is acceptable and I start worrying that I could do so much better as the lead, then I'd be fucked if my AI lead was knocked out of the fight and left me to fight the main guys in all my unarmored, long distance glory.

I prefer archer because bows are the coolest things ever. And because magic is so weird between games, especially when it relies too much on waiting for mana to recharge, or (most often) magic is underpowered in the beginning. If I have to go tanking melee, I go pure damage soaking and high lethality.

So, I wish I could go pure Theif, but most often I go Ranger. Ranger.

Really I gotta say I'm surprised there haven't been any "Magi-Knights" yet. It's a combo that I enjoy in some of my games and (at least in my opinion) a heavily armored mage is a pretty sweet concept.

Take the Arcane Warrior specialization from Dragon Age: Origins. Good GOD is that thing overpowered.

But the poll is still young, so maybe some Magi-Knights will come out of the woodwork in a bit. :p

What exactly would you call a talky-fighter? There really isn't a widely accepted designation for that playstyle.

I prefer to play as a rogue/thief.

I like being all sneaky and stabby while stealing everyone's shit.

I mean, those locked chests aren't going to loot themselves now, are they? :D

Heh really it's just a fighter that has high persuasion skill. Really that'd be a case where whatever the class is, it boils down to essentially just being a fighter that happens to be good at convincing people.

And THAT is why my #1 rule for any RPG in which you're given a party is to always...ALWAYS have a rogue on hand. Traps and locked chests. "I don't know what's in that chest, all I know is that it's everything I've always wanted!"

And for that matter, in single player RPGs, it's why I tend to go with a Spellblade type of class. I like magic too much to pass it up entirely...but lockpicking, damnit, LOCKPICKING!!!

Bleh... all three? Like, I love stealthing into position with magical means, but I also love magic-enhanced Falcon Punches, but I also love dual-wielding swords like the greatest ranger of all time, Drizzt Do'Urden.
Well, if I absolutely HAD to choose, then the fighter/mage combo would be most preferred. I seriously imagine myself fighting like Goku, or a Mass Effect vanguard.

I love playing as a rogue since they are really fun to play if you know what you're doing.

That and the loot. I'm an unashamed loot whore. :D

In my day, there were spells specifically for unlocking things. There were even spells for locating traps or, at the very least, safely triggering them.

I usually play a game, but I don't mind any glass canon builds. I like to nuke things and if it wasn't instantly obliterated I run away in fear knowing the slightest scratch will kill me. If sneaking up on enemies so I can hit them first and running away and hiding counts as part thief, then I guess ranger.

I prefer Battlemage or Arcane Warrior. Something that combines the physical prowess of a mighty Warrior with the mystical prowess of a wise Mage.

Whether it's a magically augmented Warrior or a Mage with martial prowess to defend himself in close quarters, this is also the type of character I aim for. Kratos Aurion and Zelos Wilder from Tales of Symphonia are actually perfect examples of my favorite type of character. Swordsmen capable of lashing out with magic and even close quarters magic to augment their swordplay.

If that's not possible, then either Warrior or Mage. I don't care much for playing as a Rogue. I'll let someone else in the party handle that.

Ahhhh I remember those days. Back in the day when - if you were playing as a Warrior - you could simply select the option of bashing the lock open. :3
