For me it's a combination of DRM and Micro transactions. League of legends is one of my favorite games and I have spent a lot of money on it, I don't mind the idea of micro transactions but sometimes they just get silly.

You have games that you have to pay for getting Micro transactions put in them and games will have pieces cut out to sell as DLC later.

That and DRM.

I didn't vote because those are just all too good as options. Although a fair few would be solved by people being more upstanding in regards to what they will and won't accept from publishers, the problem being that plenty of them ("the masses", if I may) don't actually mind about DRM, DLC, microtransactions, pricing etc. Personally I'm going to cement my title of prick by saying casualisation/the perception of what is a 'safe' game to make/the franchisation of most good games, which sort of ties in to gamers, but is probably more money as the root cause.

I must say though, I am sick of people saying gamers complaining is the worst thing about gaming. Ironic though that statement is. Would you really prefer people just be content with what they get? And annoying as sexism/DkS easy mode/EA/whatever else threads may get, does at least something like DRM not bother you more?

I am almost certain that that is supposed to be a joke. No businessman would so openly commit career suicide.
Then you don't know Fishsticks, my man.

Browse his twitter, trust me, it's rich. You'll be fascinated at how easily a grown man can devolve into a temper tantrum.

Developers/journalists who act as if treating gamers with a modicum of decency is taboo.

"Oh, you don't want Day 1 DLC in your game that you payed full price for? Stop being so entitled!"

And then you have people like Phil Fish who think their games are so goddamn sublime that we should be bowing our heads in praise that he graced us with a $9 price tag for a year old game like FEZ, instead of charging us $90 - and then proceeding to call his fanbase "fucking ingrates."

Give me a fucking break.
I am almost certain that that is supposed to be a joke. No businessman would so openly commit career suicide.

Adam Orth would like a word with you.

OT: I am coming around for the gaming community idea, I mean Anita is part of the gaming community...
I must admit that made me laugh a lot, but I still feel like the kind of man who would choose a Twitter avatar that makes him look like a 70's rapist would consider calling his fans 'fucking ingrates' a joke.

I took your advice, but I still don't know that I'm entirely convinced. Some of his Tweets seem like he's adopting a persona for comedic effect, and in others he just seems like a genuinely embittered lunatic.

Seeing as there is no "All of the above," option... Kinda no point in me voting. Asking somebody to pick the worst of several things he dislikes equally is rather asinine.

Though I never use gamefaqs...

I still duno, he is rather well know for making idiotic and rather incindiary comments, like telling a japanese developer that all his countries games suck..

And that gamers are terrible people..
Ohhh, I see it now, he's a preposterously self-important dickhead. I guess this is one of the problems faced by the indie market: when you don't have people above you, holding the purse-strings and checking everything you say, it's a lot easier to let your ego run completely rampant.

Needs to be an "all of the above" option, tbh. I had to think for a long time if i hated poor QA or DRM more.

Yep because we all know that the gaming community is in fact a hivemind and is not made up of millions of individual people with their own opinions and views. Did it ever occur to you that the people bitching about CoD and D3 are hold on this will blow your mind, not the same fucking people?
So you want to tell that the gaming community is free of all criticism? Because 'zey are no hivemind' they can't do any wrong and everyone else and everything else is at fault?
I honestly dont even know what to say to that. You cant seriously be that dumb, it just should not be possible.

I found the same thing, hence the topic. It is meant to promote thought into the subject and get people discussing which elements are worse in their opinion. In doing so I have found myself leaning more into a certain direction (gamers - albeit for different reasons). If you class food for thought and discussion to be asinine, then I am sorry to have offended your sensibilities. I was simply interested to see which way each individual in the Escapist community was leaning on the subject.

My main problem is that Sony and Microsoft are trying to push this new console generation on us when we're clearly not ready.

I'm not buying a PS4 or 7-whatever the hell, and practically nobody I know is either. I don't have $500+ dollars to spend on a shitty computer system that might not even have any games for it.

Not to mention how developers aren't going to spend more money to develop for a system which has higher expectations, but a LOWER userbase.

The economy still sucks too. Not as hard as in 2008, but still.

My fear is that due to this new generation, it'll split the consumers substantially, people that develop for the new generation won't make as much money as the old, and people that still develop for the PS3 and 360 won't make as much money as they used to. Everyone will say fuck it, and we'll crash hard.

2006/7's conversion was a different story, because awesome economy, and it might just be me, but the future looked brighter.

I went with Gamers.

Though its really a mix of Gamers, DRM and no new ideas. I don't expect people to boycott games with DRM, because I don't. But I do wish that people would stop buying every fucking call of duty over and over.

So of the 3 problems, 2 of them could be rectified by gamers if they voted with their wallets.

So fuck gamers, basically.

I hate when people call you try-hards when playing online. Yeah, I play online games to win, there shouldn't be anything wrong with that, but apparently that means I have no life... :/ I guess that falls into the "gamers" category so thats what I voted.

I want to say "no new ideas" Rather, no new ideas that a publisher is willing to risk money on. They may be willing to make small changes here and there within the structure of a game but ultimately each game within their respective genres seems to be absolutely just like the last. There are exceptions, of course, but there are various ideas that are left completely untouched. Understandably it is sometimes because it just appeals to an incredibly small amount of people and developers need to eat too.

If I had to name one single problem that's ruining modern games, I would say the attitude of Executives/Developers. I think that's what's responsible for all the reasons you've listed. DRM, microtransactions, shoddy online aspects, and derivative games come from the profit-above-all attitude that's taken over (AAA) gaming. Don't get me wrong, I understand the need to be profitable - but when a game can sell millions of copies, sell more than any other game in its franchise, and still be considered a failure than something is very wrong. I also think they're responsible for the different gaming "types." It comes from a desire to slot everyone into neat little groups that they can then advertise too.
