...the fact is that a majority of furries view it as a sexual thing
Incorrect, sir. I know a furry, and he has let know that it definitely isn't a sexual thing. In fact, he also said that you don't need an animal costume to be a furry.
What you did there, do you see it?
Me: "statistically a large proportion of this group are X."
You: "I know one person who isn't X (or says he isn't) and thus none of them are."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furry_fandom#Sexual_aspects
As per every time I argue this, I have figures that back me up. Looks like out of every 5 furries 4 are jacking it, weird huh? Looks like maybe they don't want to admit to it but also want their fetish pubic.
hey there! nice little post you have there, oh look! a wikipedia article, how nice!!, too bad its a biased source.
let me explain you something by example, see those Japanese cartoons??? the ones with the hot girls? yeah, there are probably hundreds of them out there, now if you ask a fan of such cartoons "would you be interested sexually in them" the ratings will be the same (actually, they would probably be even higher because its not a taboo subject) its normal for a human being to have some sort of sexual attraction to what they find exiting/interesting and even more, that have some sort of sex appeal (Minerva mink from Animaniacs, Crystal from Star Fox, just to name a few)
now, how many fan fiction have you ever noticed about your favorite series? yeah, its not even the tip of the iceberg
why do i call this a bias? because if you go to ANY entry in wikipedia related to the fandom in the Internet about any topic that could potentially have sex appeal, not ONE will list how many people find sexual interest in say "MLP: Friendship is magic", or the followers of "DR. WHO" (two series with a LOT of fandom)
the only Fandom that is "crossed" because it finds certain aspects of their "interests" sexually attractive are "Furryes", some say its bestiality (when its not) some say we all wear fursuits (which is not true) and some say that its a mental illness (haha, this one is the best of them all, its called "Voyeurism", the same EVERYONE haves)
that´s why we as a community try to "redefine" the aspects of the fandom, if you do a quick search, you will find that "Furry" and "Yiffer" are two terms completely different, this of course, outside of the "mainstream" audiences, they have already made their mind about us, and refuse to help us redefine the term, quite a normal reaction actually.
that way we can touch the subject of "Furry" without calling forth the image of sexualized anthropomorphic beings, its like "Anime" and "Hentai" one is for "clean" material and the other is for "dirty" material, both are so close together that if you show me a lover of anime, i can show you a lover of hentai, and i bet you the rating of "4 out of 5" is the exact same in that fandom, or any fandom actually.
Now, "Hentai", (which is where this fandom came out) is about "sexualized" toon idols, the "Yiffers" are doing the same thing, only problem is that their toons are from "Warner Brothers" or "Hanna Barbera", and many of them didn't do "humans" they did "anthropomorphic animals", and then they discovered they could make "Any" animal anthropomorphic (just like the "Hentai" lovers discovered they could create their own characters) its the same coin, but one side was born in Japan and the other in the United States.
