lol I do my own work. The head gasket job only cost me 250 bucks because of that. I also only had to have the head shaved 0.020" or so.

Well, as my picture shows, I have no garage to do my own work, and hard times have forced me to put my baby into service before she was ready. She runs great now, but I drove her for several months on the blown head gasket with a leaky radiator. Nothing longer than 5 miles, but it wore on the motor none the less. I put another (this one new) radiator in her in December, along with a new steering pump (turns out the one that came on the motor was bad, as were the fuel rails) so it may have cost me more than having a mechanic install a junkyard motor, but I got a deal from my friend, and the motor has 25,000 less miles on it than my previous motor, so I am happy with it.

I have the skill to do my own work, just not the time or shop space.

Gotta love old American engines, eh? They may be lazy lumps of iron but they just won't die.

I get better gas mileage in my small block V-8 (God bless Chevy mouse motors in particular) than do similar age Honda Civics, and I smoke them from stoplight to stoplight while I am at it. And that was in my '92 Deville. I would never race this one, I have put too much into her and she is a way bigger car than the '92, but the gas mileage is comparable. The previous motor literally fell apart, with oil leaking out a burst fitting and the only indicator was a nasty black trail all the way home from the opposite side of town. Whoops. But the motor never showed any signs that it was going to die. It turns out the damage was irreparable, some fitting rusted out, but I didn't think the motor was going to see use again anyway, the previous owner's wife drove it for a LONG time with no water in it, and it was pretty well done at that point.

If I ever have the honor of getting a new car, I want a new Impala. I have heard very good things about the v-6, and I would never want to go back to a 4-cylinder. My driving style just doesn't fit in with the lower torque motors.
