I'm a male who plays as whatever the hell I feel like.

Sometimes male, sometimes female, other times I just wish I could just play as a different race since humans are boring.

I am a male and always play a male
(I did play one or two females in WoW but that was just me and a friend screwing around in the low level areas doing nothing)
To me I could never play a female normally because I would know there was a male npc who would be attracted to me and it would just be so damn creepy to hear him/them hit on my female character.
I guess it is equally creepy to hear female NPCs flirt with my male characters so I am just a hypocrite.

How can you repel bitching of that magnitude?!?!

what?!? dealing with woman bullshit is easier than...guy bullshit?

OT: well I am a male so most times i play as a male, but any game that allows me to mod, and they have some sweet ass female armor mods/weapons (sometimes they look way better on females or they are female exclusive) i'll roll a female character to use em, otherwise it's probably 90% male most of the time. (this is including mass effect)

Always had a preference for female characters.

I blame Lara Croft. She was the first videogame character I ever really played with, and it just sort of stuck.

First Person RPG - Male

Third Person RPG - Female

Would rather look at a woman and play as a man. /snide remark

*laughs* I fully acknowledge it is crazy.

If I had an answer for you Id give it. But I don't. I have no idea why putting up with problematic women is easier for me then putting up with problematic men. But it is. *shrugs* *laughs*

Male gamers often bring up immersion when they give a reason not to play as a female character, but I find this a strange reason. I don't have ANY PROBLEM immersing myself in a game where I'm playing a female character. I mean if my character can shoot fire out of her hands, and is on a quest to save the earth, and we have no problem letting that immerse us and make us "feel like the character", I don't understand how the simple fact that the character is female being a huge problem with immersion. If the game is good enough, I can feel like I'm a dwarf, a wizard, a military commander in space, and I can also feel like I'm a woman. Whats the issue?

Anyway, I'm male and more often than not I choose a female character, but it depends on the game and its content.

Its mostly because the vast majority of action games have male protagonists, so I suppose it's my way of mixing it up a bit. I also really like action-oriented female characters with strong personalities who are in command, don't take any shit, and aren't sex symbols, such as my Femshep in Mass Effect. Not because it turns me on or something, I just think its cool. Some part of me has always appreciated female empowerment I think.

But I really don't play that many RPGs anyway.

I play as both, it depends what I am in the mood for.

I'm male by the way, I don't really see how that matters, but since you were asking for real life genders in the poll I'll just add it.

Errr, on games that can be completed after a while I'll play either or, games like skyrim that you can basically never finish I play a dude. Just because other people judge me when they see me playing a girl.

Then again, In saints row I change gender at least every half hour.
Changing gender and appearance the way you can in Saints Row is genius. I love that feature, it makes customization so much more fun.

OT: I'm a guy playing as a guy. No reason, I'm just lazy so I usually go with a default guy who doesn't look too ugly. The exception being Satins Row where I customize more than I play.

Male playing female (mostly, not exclusively). Easier to make a better looking character (male characters usually don't look as cool, though I make them in MMOs a lot when it fits, like in TOR with a Sith Warrior, a big Pureblood brute looks awesome) and I prefer watching a girl character kick arse :)

haha glad you understood it was a joke..with some of the girls/guys I know, i could agree with you whole-heartily, and obviously it's video games so it's not a big deal, just wanted to point that out for some lulz :D

If I have a choice and the female characters aren't ridiculously over-sexualised (unless that fits the character I want to play) I choose female characters. I'm usually trying to imagine the character as a fantasy version of myself, so it just makes sense to play as my own gender.

If I'm not trying to play myself I still usually choose females but there are exceptions, like my Tauren druid in WoW. I have at least one toon of every race and class, and all are female except him. I usually know how I want my WoW characters to be before I create them, and for some reason my Tauren was a dude.

Having said all that, I have no problem at all with playing male characters in games, especially not when the character is well fleshed-out.

I'll do male first go around (is male) but I've no objections to playing a female after to try out different play styles.

The last two RPGs I played are Fallout 3 and Fallout 3: New Vegas. I'm a guy. I played them as women because the black widow perk is just sort of awesome for killing a mostly male list of enemies.

Just got Skyrim (yes, I'm behind the times) so I haven't decided yet.

I vary what I play depending on how it effects the game or just how I'm feeling at the time of character creation. For example Mass Effect gets a female Shep as priority because of Jennifer Hale while in DA:O I prefer a male protagonist because I want the Morrigan Romance. Either way I never view a character I'm playing in a game as any form of reflection of myself so which I choose doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Last three characters were a male orc, male breton and male nord for Skyrim, so I guess I'm going with a female character next game I get my hands on.

I'm 50/50 no real reason just like mixing it up sometimes, though on Mount and Blade I read it was more of a challenge to play as a female character, if you ever wanted to experience sexist behavior in a game? M&B is the game for you.
funny thing is, in mount and blade it is much easier to take over the entire world for yourself as a female than a male character. a male character is superior if you just want to join a country and be the best darn tooting general/knight you can be.
