If the male looks absolutely ridiculous, then I will be a female.
^This. Sometimes, the male characters look kind of like cave-men or something similar. But then again...rarely, the female choices do also (Oblivion), but hey, that's what mods are for.

I play as a guy, because I am a guy.

In most games like this, it doesn't really make a difference anyway.

Ass rule... simple as that... If I'm going to be staring at someone's behind while I play then it should at least be mildly appealing. The dude option doesn't work that way for me :/. I don't pretend to be female just because of the character, and the way I talk generally gives it away before I have to say it anyway.

In the case on multiple characters, I'll take at least one of each since there may be a gameplay mechanic that associates your gender into it.

And I agree completely.

Though this had lead to some awkward times running through Goldshire.
I dont go to GS anymore.

Eh, I play as both. Guys more then girls, as I am one, but I play both a good bit.
Why is this? Because I've yet to have an awkward situation...yet, and because I actually design characters.
I don't just use a standard or model them after me, I actually make characters. (With backstory, loyalties, and relatives taken into account, as well.)
I tend to play guys more on FPSs, both equally (As I never make a character and stick to them. DAMN YOU, CITY OF HEROES!) on MMORPGs and girls more on plain, good ol' RPGs, like Oblivion.
I'm not crazy, shut up. (I also do not condone human-animal hybrids, or furries. Argonians kick ass, though.)

Well since im a guy i always play as a guy the first time. If i play the game agian later i usually wonder i i should try to play as a girl.
Im still on the fence about that since i often make another male anyway.

this is of course not refering to games where you have to play as a certian character. Im talking games like Fable 2, WoW, Oblivion where being a gender changes nothing. Personally i always play as a male...why? because i was a nightelf preist in WoW once....my dad walked in....he looked at the screen and walked out....im just not comfertable pretending to be a girl on the internet...kinda creepy in my opponion. what about you guys?/girls?/....others?
I tend to stick to my own gender(male) simply because I find it odd to be refered to as the other gender when talking to NPCs. But when I get around to playing Mass Effect(and ME 2) I may do a run as a female Shepard after I've gone through and romanced the lovely ladies of the ME universe.

99% of the time I'll play a female character because I'm female, simple of that. I have been know to play a male in rare instances: when you don't have a choice (take Planescape: Torment, for instance), and to try different things once I've already played through once or twice (Mass Effect, Dragon Age: Origins, more recently).

Whenever I make a male character on a game (unless dwarf or I had no choice) I could never
continue with said character, but for some reason female makes me want to finish the game more.

I play male because I try to make him closely look like me, so I can feel like I'm the character in the game

I'm a girl and so my first instinct is usually to use a girl character, but then I'll usually end up irritated by my alleged Machinist running around in a metal bikini and floor length loincloth. What do you think would happen if she was elbows into a machine and that thing snagged on a gear? She'll have a lot of fun explaining the crotch injuries to the doctor.

Soooooooooo I'll generally get annoyed and start over as a guy so my character can wear actual clothing.

I play both, my first character is always male, my second is always female, my third is male and so on. Unfortunately i've worked out that this usually results in my main character always being female since my first character tests out the game and gets a feel for it and then my second character is the race and class i want to play most as now that i know what the game is like.

Female, 90% of the time. They are just usually better looking, with some rare exceptions, and I value looks over playing my own gender. I'm gonna be looking at the character's ass all day, might at least be a nice looking ass.

The remaining 10% is usually the second or third playthrough, when I keep creating character's that look exactly like the last one I had because either the character creation sucks, or it is too complex for me to create anything decent, and then I will pick a male character for variety.(Fallout3, Saints Row 2, Oblivion, etc.)
That, or because I'm playing a race with god awful looking girls, like Trolls,Orcs,Taurens, crab people

MMOs: Usually a guy because explaining myself every time someone asks why I am female is annoying.

Everything Else: Depends. If there are romance options (similar to Dragon Age/Mass Effect) I'll pick a Male my first play through. If no romance options I'll play Female near exclusively, because I like how they look better. IMO Females get more "love" from the people who design them and almost always look better, where as most Males look like shit (case in point, Resident Evil 5).
