Im getting a Wii U and thats it! for the price of what the 720 & PS4 will be I can upgrade my PC to stupid proportions & have money for some games aswell!
The Wii U really intrigues me and I love how Nintendo are the ones that continue to innovate! Whilst im guessing that the 720 & PS4 will just be upgraded versions with super uber hyper realistic graphics!

I've decided that I'm done with consoles outside of handheld ones. Basically once games for the Wii, PS3 and 360 just stop being made, I'm pretty much dried up from the video games market.

I just don't play games as much as I used to, so I'm done buying new consoles.

Anyway, to answer your question, I'm not sure why this would be an issue.

If we are talking about my favorite franchise...why WOULDN'T I want to buy it new? I mean if you don't buy your favorite franchise new, what do you buy new?

It won't happen. Despite all the "used buyers are entitled whiners" nonsense you hear on this site the general gaming public would never let them get away with this.

Elder Scrolls/Fallout would NOT go console only.

They have a massive PC user base (welcome to the modding community) and that would cost them massively.

I'm not buying a next gen console either way.

The only franchises I have any vested interest in are those 2 and that's mainly because I am a modder.

I really couldn't care if anything else went console only. I miss out on 360 only franchises now and have no interest in playing them.

My PS3 was only recently purchased and that was a present for my wife when I got out of hospital and couldn't sit at my PC desk.

I've managed all these years with my PC only and if it wasn't for those daft bloody cats getting under y feet and tripping me down the bloody stairs I wouldn't have had a console at all.

I've got zero interest in a "next gen" console.

To be fair, if the gaming industry keeps going down the road it's on (DLC, online passes, DRM and other shit we didn't have years ago) then i'll be looking for a new hobby entirely.

I really do enjoy gaming but it's starting to cost more money than it's worth.
I own a cat, I feel your pain.

If there is a new Next Gen coming out, I might as well wait a year. Knowing Microsoft, something horribly wrong will befall their beloved Console and ask everyone to A) ship it back so they can put a band-aid on it or B) ask you to buy a completely new, revamped system for twice the original price with a bunch of unnecessary garbage added on.

Also I haven't bought a used game ever since Gamespot tried to sell me a used copy of the first Left 4 Dead for $60, years after it came out.

Most likely, as I've never bought a used game before and I don't plan on doing so any time soon.

Since I really don't buy used games that often. I've had too many bad experiences with used games/rentals, including but not limited to:

- Buying a game used that didn't work. Multiple times from a local Gamestop.

- Trading a game that when played makes my room smell like Musk Cologne. My friend had knocked over a bottle into the bottom of the cartridge, He traded it to me for letting him borrow some other SNES game. That was in '93... The cartridge still emits the odor today. Just not as strong.

- Buying a game from a local game store that included a MUSIC CD instead of the game on the case.

The only time I would buy a "used" game is if it's still in it's original packaging and I can see the disc's condition(if the plastic is off, ofc). I know how a lot of people take care of their games and I don't want to have to deal with it anymore.

As for: "Would I get a console if it didn't allow used games?", since it's a huge "Fuck you" to a large number of consumers, I probably wouldn't until a major price drop. (Like how I bought my PS3 + 360 for less than a brand new Wii).

Not going to happen. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo would sooner go towards a digital distribution model citing that as the way of the future. Sure there will still be physical copies of games around for some time because old fogies like me would refuse to change, but eventually that will go away too.

I hardly ever buy used anyway, so I wouldn't really mind having used games banned. Besides, I bought my PS3 just for MGS4, and it's a safe bet I'd do the same with a new console generation.

I think you forgot that a 5-7 year lifespan on a modern console system is a very high estimate. My 360 is on it's 5th year now, but I use it maybe once a month or so. I played the crap out of my PS3 (10-15 hours a week or so) and it burned out before the 2 year mark, so then it's more cash for a new one plus some lost data.

My last laptop has lasted me 6 years and counting, and though the graphics need to be turned down on modern pc games, it can still play them without any hardware modifications. Add that to the sheer amount of productivity you can accomplish on a PC (Even if built just for games) and I'd say that $861 is well worth the cost, even using your overly skewed numbers.
Bought my PS3 when the console was new 6 years ago. I've played it 7-8 hours a day almost constantly and it still works. My 360 and Wii both get similar workouts and they are still working just fine.

In the same amount of time, I've had to replace 3 laptops and my two towers. It could just be that they just seen their life, but there is no reason for all of them to stop working after 2 years.

Personal anecdotes as proof of superiority doesn't work for this exact reason. You've had great luck with PC and I salute you for that. I have had terrible luck with PC and I consider them the inferior platform.

From the way they're talking it looks like we aren't going to have much choice if you want to play games on a console. Though I think I'm going to dump the money I would've into a console into a brand new PC (mine needs so many upgrades i might as well start over) Not being able to buy used, borrow, and rent defeats a big point of consoles to me. Not to mention how almost NOTHING has same system multiplayer worth a damn anymore, one of the big advantages of consoles over PCs.

Wait.. After reading all this, I still dont get. How exactly is getting exclusive titles somehow compensation for the loss of used games?

That makes absolutely no sense. Its sort of like asking, Would you buy this console, if you do we have to shoot you in the arm, but if we do that, we will give you a years supply of candy.

Anyway, its a moot point for me. I will not encourage the industry to bypass laws of ownership by cramming digital distribution down our throats so they can pretend like this is helping the industry when in actuallity it is only helping a portion of the industry, that portion being.. them.

So in short, NEVER! It would hurt me as a consumer, it would hurt you as a gamer, it would hurt developers, it would hurt publisher profits, and it would do more damage to an already flailing economy. It is an incredibly stupid idea that trades the perception of a benefit for no actual benefit at all.

1 new console: $499 (based on PS3 release date price)
Lifetime: 5-7 years (approx, I'm also still able to play a 15 year old PS1 and a 10 year old PS2 and XBox)
Upgrades: 0

1 new reasonably priced desktop computer: $439 (ooh! $70!)
Lifetime: 10 years (approx, depending on Operating System, I usually buy a new laptop every 5 years, and we replaced our family desktop about that often as well because it couldn't work with whatever new system came out)
Upgrades: New top of the range graphics card: $337
New top of the range sound card: $60
Extra memory capacity at (roughly) two year intervals (based on a quick forum trawl on a PC Gaming forum): $25

Total price after two years ownership: $861

Anything I forgot?
At this very moment, you could buy a pretty decent PC for less than £500, one that will play pretty much any game at almost top settings, and will continue to for at least 2 years, and eventually settings will have to be lowered a little. However, you have bought a computer AND a console, so you're not £100 up. There's also the fact that games are cheaper on PC, so for every 10 (new) games you buy, that's an extra £100 saving for PC users.

Then there are mods, if your into that, which can massively extend the lifetime of a game. Also stuff like the Humble Indie bundles, if you like indie games, PC is better, and cheaper.

I'd also like to point out that I am a mostly console gamer. I use my xbox 360 for all my AAA gaming, because, despite just arguing that a PC is cheaper in some ways, the console is definitely cheaper short term.

Oh. You have an opinion based on your personal experiences as well? That's cool. Not sure why you're explicitly targeting me, though, as it proves the initial post invalid as well. You keep on doing whatever it is you do! *thumbs up*

why pay nearly 500 dollars for a new console when I can upgrade my pc for 100 dollars or less?

Too many problems with consoles anyway.

Red Ring, Yellow Light, ApocalyPS3, and broken TV (wii)
Paraphrased counter argument stating PCs are more expensive than consoles because of the need to upgrade relatively frequently which makes them more expensive in the long run.
You forget the fact that most people already own a PC in the first place. The average person doesn't build a gaming rig, they just play off of their home PC. A $100-200 video card is all most people need in order to be able to play the majority of games. And when the next generation rolls around, most people won't bother upgrading until the point where they're no longer able to play a game on their PC, at which point they can upgrade to last-years vid card for, again, $100-200. Whereas the next gen consoles are no doubt going to cost around $300-400, meaning that, even if you only started playing video games this generation, and bought a console at $200, when the next generation rolls out, you will have paid much more on hardware you bought just for gaming.
"The Average Person" doesn't play stuff like Skyrim on their PC. The people who play Skyrim/CoD/BF3/etc on PC ARE the people who get gaming rigs. The "average person" who PC games plays stuff like Peggle and they aren't really applicable here.

Really, the constant "ZOMG PC HAS GUD GRAPHIX" mantra that the PC Master-Race constantly uses to justify the need for a new console gen so it can "catch up" with PC capabilities completely shoots your argument in the leg. To this day I have yet to hear a reason for a need for a new console generation besides the "it has to catch up to PC graphics" one, which is hardly a reason at all if you ask me.

Also, people do realize there's more console games than just the stuff like Skyrim which actually gets a PC port? Because if I go by this thread, there's only been about 5 games made this entire console generation. My PS3 library may not be that extensive, but of the 20ish that I own, not a single one of them is available on the PC and I believe only 3 or 4 were cross platform.

On-topic. I don't know. I'd have to see how things develop. Getting rid of used games basically leaves the industry open for rampant price-gouging especially once the main release window has closed. I'm not sure I'd want to encourage that "Hurry and buy it now or you're fucked when the resellers start jacking the price up." You already see it now with collectors editions of stuff, I'd hate to see that practice apply to every release.

I would get them even if they didn't have an exclusive and banned used games.

I'm doubting they care much, if at all, if the people who only buy used don't buy their console. They make their money off of new releases, so they aren't losing anything.
