Poll: What is it with Sniper Rifles and the Pro Mentality?

Playing Halo CE online, I could say that 50% of all servers are sniper only no shield games. "no shield" meaning you don't have a shield so headshots as well as body shots can kill in one hit.

I can't be the only guy to notice this. The sniper is fought over in lots of online games, people would hang back and take pot shots with a one hit kill weapon in a safe zone rather than engage the enemy with teamwork. Why is this? Who decided that the highest level of play makes Sniper Rifles the best weapon? I hate good snipers as much as the next guy but I don't think the weapon should be banned. No that's too much, I just hate it when EVERYONE is sniping each other and the game becomes battleship. With nobody daring to go closer and into the open and using one hit kill weapons from far, like a pair of battleships at sea.

It is only because picking people off with a one kill shot from a safe distance is a good way to pat your stats. Thats why most people do it because it makes their KDR look good.

There is no problem with sniping, or even with sniper wars, they can be barrels of fun. The only problem is, i've never found a game were you can be a true sniper, just hiding and hiding, waiting for the right time to strike, then hitting hard and fast and moving quickly before you have more holes in you than swiss cheese. Most games use sniper rifles like an extrmely accurate machine gun, that's not how they are meant to be used.

Personally, i'd like to see a sniper game that plays like the sniper section against The End in MGS3 (aka: the funnest part of that game. Lots of cover, camo, and some decent rifles. It would focus on getting a comfortable position so your character doesn't shift around, holding still, bullet drop and the whole nine yards, rather than just being a tacked on gun in an FPS for people with above-average reflexes like they are in Halo.

It usually takes a lot of skill to get the right shot and not get spotted, trying to stay alive as long as possible to be the best you can be.

I don't mind if someone picks up the sniper as long as they use the damn thing.

Camping at the back of the map and firing once every 5 minutes is not using the sniper effectively.

Flanking an enemy position, causing a headshot which distresses troops allowing a head on force to take them while they're jumping to other cover, then retreating to find a different firing position is a good way to play.

I'm not always perfect but at least I try and be useful.

I love it when people try to do sniper matches, because it means they aren't watching their backs, and I get to do a couple of quick little assassinations when I flank around behind them.

Seriously, there's nothing sweeter than shooting a sniper in the back of the head (except maybe doing it repeatedly because the sniper keeps coming back to the same spot).

oh god, try and play some reach slayer online, EVERY FUCKING TIME people only pick swat and snipers when its available, which basically turns into a campfest of who can headshot who the fastest. i dont mind playing it once every 3-4 games but literally every fucking time people vote for it, it gets annoying as balls (i usually get 1st or second so im not getting owned by it but i just hate having to play it all the time)

I love snipers, but when it's too common it takes the point out of it IMO. For a good balance, there needs to be much less sniping than open warfare; snipers should be support, not the bulk of the force.

As for the mentality, I guess it's that, generally speaking, sniping needs better reflexes and features a higher risk-reward relationship than other weapons (although shotgun would be close). It's pretty nullified in your example but again, generally speaking.

Eh. Snipers on 2fort usually end up just killing each other across the map, so the effect is the same as if there are no snipers at all. Every now and then you'll see a more adventurous one (usually with the bow) who has serious skill at close to medium range.

I love it when my friends and I play 4 player split screen, because we get majority vote every time, so we get to play whatever the hell we want, and don't have to bend to what other people want to play (elite slayer FTW!).

yeah unfortunately me and my friends have such different schedules this semester we can't find much time together to do this.

but also DAMN elite slayer is the shit =] getting stickies at the start and barrel rolling around people ftwwwww

unfortunately everyone besides you and me (that i play with) despises this mode with a passion...

I'm the guy who will sneak up to a sniper and go for the no-scope. Admit it: when you achieve a one-shot-kill, no-scope, you feel pretty damn good about it.

I do mostly firefight in Reach which makes those sniper matches fun: Everyone has a rifle and they're aimed at the incoming hoard. Although in my last match, I felt like Hank at La Grunta (King of the Hill reference. Anybody get it?) Just 4 guys, at 4 points on the map picking off all threats before they become threats. Still fun but in the way people say fishing is fun...fun until you think about it for too long.

Most people seem to think that using a sniper in anyway makes you a pro or at least look that way. I used to be very very VERY good with the sniper rifles on counter strike source but I never camped with them and I didn't use them because I thought that they would make me look good.

I agree entirely.

Whenever I get BTB snipers on Hemo, I make it my goal to get as many melee/pistol kills as possible.
Why? Because I love the irony of killing someone with a 1-shot hyper-long range weapon, with a knife.

I've also noticed that 90% of the people that play sniper games have no idea what they are doing.
They:
- Stay in the same spot for multiple kills, thinking the people they have killed, and the other surrounding people, will not notice them
- They go to the same spot again and again because they think that is intelligent "I got one kill there, I'll get more!", cuz the other team totally won't expect that
- They stand still (50% of the time behind cover, 50% of the time, standing in the middle of nowhere) and take their shots
- They completely suck close range, and/or cannot no-scope worth a damn

In Reach, I love how it is so much easier to no-scope than previous games, and when you do get that assassination, it is so much more satisfying to tell them in explicit terms "You are a dumb twat"

I say keep the sniper games coming. Maybe if people play them enough, they'll actually get good.

A good sniper backing your team can make the difference in any game, and everyone thinks they can do it better than everyone else. The no shields bit come in for one of 2 reasons:

Realism. Which tbh on a game like Halo is a laughable concept. You should be playing CoD5 or CoD4 (the first one not the crappy second one) if you want realism.


Also if you do it right, it looks monster on you K/D score Also, the reson its the highest level of play is because you actually need to be able to play to snip. If you dont know what I mean go play CoD4, and cry the first time you get some idiot with a noob cannon with 450 round clip, extra wall pen and extra damage who just randomly fire at wall and hope for kills.
