Firstly, I'm not your friend, buddy.

Secondly, either Wolfenstein or Metro.
Even if the former started as a completely diffirent gerne, and the latter can be played with hardly firing any shots.

Its like saying a hamburger is the best salad cause it had lettuce in it. I think you could remake the Half-Life games and remove the FPS part and still have a good game.
Yeah, I guess you could, which is exactly why I like it so much. About all my favorite shooters are like that (hell, most of my favorite games in general). FPS like Bioshock, The Darkness, Spec Ops: The Line, Stalker, they all got much more going on than just shooting shit.

Again, I'm not saying its a bad series. I just think locking it into the FPS category ignores most of HL's true strengths.

Define 'best'.

'Best' as in 'My favourite'?
'Best' as in 'Most popular'?
'Best' as in 'Most units sold'?
'Best' as in 'Most innovative'?
'Best' as in 'Greatest legacy'?

Depending on your definition of 'best', OP, you could make a case for each of the poll options you have up there, and a fair few that you haven't.

Call of Duty of course.

Because it sells a lot.

And everyone knows that a game that caters to market forces is the best game.

It's objectively the best.

I believe his answer to that would be something along the lines of:

"My friend, best can is always most manly and hardcore."

Oh I agree, but then I feel the same way about most game genres. Besides survival horror they don't tell you anything about the game beyond its mechanics. ''Walking simulator'' especially is one of the dumbest genre names out there.

From the listed options, I'd go with Battlefield as number 1, CoD as number 2 and Halo as 3.

The other games in the list are good for reasons other than being a tightly made fun FPS.

Off list, Timesplitters 4 lyf.

Halo.

Spend more then my fair share of hours into that series, from single-player and co-op experiences to long multiplayer sessions. And how of all the options, it honestly strikes me as the best, with it's story, characters and eventually enemy motivation and some of the shenanigans you can get into.

I'm gonna say...

COD - Because it has the best shooting mechanics and superior story telling abilities

Battlefield - Because it has the second best shooting mechanics and story telling

Oooohhhh man, this was way harder than it should have been xD

It's a tough choice between Doom and Halo for me. I could never hop on the Half Life train (not saying they're not amazing/don't deserve the praise they get, they just never had the same impact on me). Doom is just so fun. The originals are timeless imo, and the recent release did a pretty good job of keeping that Doom feel. On the other hand, I've loved every Halo since release and just am always looking forward to more of it. (Although, I'm not a fan of h5 multiplayer, it just seems meh compared to h1-h3). I guess I'll go with Halo. The amount of Co-op couch time and LAN parties with the early titles in the series were just too much fun.

From those listed I'd say Half-Life, since it's the only series I've actually played more than one game from. My favorite however would be Borderlands. Spend countless hours playing and it has almost all I could wish for from an FPS. Leveling system with skills, loot, lots of humor and an open world.
Sadly The Pre-Sequel was awful, but I do hope they make a third installment soon with the BL2 studio.

Ah, I see. Well in that case ...

Metro series is having the hardest of all cores, and many atmospheres. Pacing is bestest of all, with plots that grip ball and refuses to lessen.

Marathon is my personal favourite. A lot of shooters (especially modern ones) have far better gameplay, but these games have just sucked me in over the years with their story, tone and art.

The story is pretty incredible, especially for the time. You play a supersoldier essentially being thrown back and forth across the universe and through time to serve the (often convoluted) purposes of several mad AI's. Creeping through ancient alien fortresses and temples on dead worlds, black derelict ships floating through the void, even through dreams and nightmares.

Level design is pretty great too. Every level is an intricate multi-tiered puzzle box. You need to fiddle with wierd switches, traverse looping pathways, constantly check your map, get a handle on your bearings and kill your way through hordes of strange aliens that are all there with a purpose in the context of the story.

Gameplay isn't bad by any means by the standard of these old pseudo-3D shooters. It's not as tight as Doom and takes some getting used to though. Movement is extremely floaty, almost like you're gliding through the levels. Shooting feels very good. The animations and physics for the way the aliens die are very punchy. It's a strange engine.

Art-wise though, these games are astounding. Gorgeous, almost surreal pulpy sci-fi of just my kind of flavor. All about ancient alien constructs and flowing shapes and strange colours and space demons from beyond the fabric of a star. The terminals that tell the story sometimes open into wierd files with odd little sketches and abstract poetry that all have a place within the dream-like lore and progression of events.

Just check out some of these images from the game and the art archives:

I fucking love Marathon.

I'd have probably said "Halo" were it not for everything from "Halo: Reach" onwards - ah well.

I guess "Portal", both are just utterly fantastic games. The first took inspiration from good sources ("System Shock" especially) coupled with the portal mechanic to make something truly special. Then they (kinda) did it again with the second game, though I don't think it's quite as great.
