2nd generation. Because you got to go back to freaking Kanto! None of the other games have done that, which made me sad.

First one of course, best memories from that one. Second was still good and I followed some of the third but nothing after that one, so wouldn't know if fourth or fifth are any good or not.

Gen 2 is my favorite, definately.

Also, obvious ploy to see poster's age groups is obvious.

I prefer the first 151 pokemon. Maybe I'm biased due to nostalgia, and the fact that I played pokemon yellow and red as a kid, but honestly, it's just the pokemon I prefer. That's not to say I prefer the game itself. I would still happily play pokemon yellow, or red, or blue, but it's obvious that so many improvements have been made in terms of graphics and improvements of gameplay mechanics.

Personally, I would actually LOVE to see an updated remake of pokemon yellow, red, or blue, because then those that wanted to could play through their original games with all the modern updates, and they could do what they did with soul silver and heart gold, and add all the extra pokemon and stuff in at the end of it.

The following is all from an objective standpoint, my personal favourite is gen 2.

Gen 5, it's basically the same as every other gen except with better graphics, music, team choices, plot and gameplay options. Get someone who's never played a pokemon game before to play all 5 gens, I'm willing to bet that he likes gen 5 the best.

Unless you're talking about which gen conjures up the most mindless nostalgia. Then gen 1, totes.
Really? I felt gen 5 had terrible graphics, they zoom in on your pokemon so it's pixelated by comparison to your opponent and the way they make them jiggle only serves to tilt the pixel and that just looks bad, I'd say gen 4 had the better graphics.

Generation 3.

Graphics were fast, masses of improvements, and I remember liking pretty much every new pokemon in the Hoenn region. Contests were fun, I remember I got obsessed with them for a while. Plus, secret bases were a fantastic idea, and it is a shame that they have not been used in the same way since.

Firered and Leafgreen not cut it for you then?

2nd gen would be my favorite. I had my cute little Eevee team and we'd rolfstomp everywhere. :3
This new gen though... What the fuck happened? Run out of ideas much?

For me, HG/SS. You could catch all of the previous generations of Pokemon, and all of the ones after the original Gold and Silver. Plus the updated Graphics and gameplay were cool. The only thing I miss is my Zoroarks from B/W. :(

Steel and dark types were Gen 2.

OT: Generation 2 for me. It took everything I loved about Generation 1 and added more depth. Not only that, but you could travel back to Kanto and fight the gym leaders you already knew (with a few changes to reflect time). I was beyond excited when the remakes came out.

I went with the original 101.

Edit: well there was supposed to be a poll where the only poll option was the original 101. :p
Pretty sure the first generation had 150. ;)

Personally, I love gen 2 the most. The new types, the diversity- it was great. Gen 3 was pretty good too.

Eff. I was thinking I should have looked it up to be sure... Thanks for reminding me on that one.

The second generation, the Johto Region(Gold, Silver and Crystal).

I started with this generation and it has some of my favourite Pokemon in it. Not just that... just overall I think it is the best.

If your asking which was the best games, either Heart Gold/Soul Silver or Black/White.
If your asking which has the best Pokemon, I don't think you can say which is best. Everyone generation has good and bad Pokemon.

A tie between first generation and second generation. I loved the originals but I also loved the wide rarity the second generation made.
This, all the good with only a slight shit-dribble.

I think the second was the best, although in more recent times I've come to appreciate the third generation a lot more than when I first played it. I think the second was the best because it had so many improvements over the original, much more than any other generation has improved on it's predecessor. I also loved how you could travel back to Kanto, it made the game feel twice as long as any other generation, even if it wasn't really. And I think the Pokemon design was at it's peak there. There were so many great additions, and none that were really terrible. A lot of my favourite Pokemon come from that generation. I also think I like it so much just because I played at at the perfect time. I was the perfect age to really be in to it, it really was something really special to me. It's created a lot of memories.

At first I was a bit underwhelmed at the third generation. Probably because at the time I was disappointed that you didn't go back to previous regions like you did in the generation before. They also didn't allow you to catch every single Pokemon in existence so far, which you could to before. But in hindsight that was probably the right decision, since that's when the number of Pokemon started to get a bit crazy. I think that generation is also the first where you can see they were starting to run out of ideas for Pokemon design, but there are still loads of great ones in that generation. And in fact over time Metagross has become my favourite Pokemon, and a lot of others in that generation have creeped in to my favourites list. The feel and aesthetic of the game were really well designed to. Also I think the age I played at it helped too. I was still young enough to really be in to it. After that I've grown tired with the games. The design has barely changed since that generation and the Pokemon designs have gotten worse and worse.

I know it probably won't happen since it goes against the design philosophy of Pokemon, but I think the only way I'll play another Pokemon game is if they make a proper fully 3D RPG game on a home console where you can fully explore a big world and catch wild Pokemon. Also it should allow me to catch all the Pokemon so far. Even if having every single Pokemon in a game is a bit overwhelming I hate not being able to catch my favourites. I was never really in to "catching them all", just training my favourites and creating an awesomely powerful team. Also changing up the design of "8 gyms then Elite Four, with criminal organisation thrown in" is direly needed. I've gotten SO bored of that now. I don't mind there being gyms or having a crime organisation to bring down, it's just it feels to formulaic to do it now. They need to change the way you go about doing those things, and add in a new focus to the game. Give the game an actual story and better character motivation. Pokemon Colosseum did that a bit, but there was very little room to explore the world apart the critical path. It would be really cool if they could release this game as like the third instalment to a generation mostly on hand-helds, like the Crystal, Emerald or Platinum versions were, but set in a different region to the rest of the generation, and to allow trading between them. That would be my perfect Pokemon game. Won't happen though I bet.

Depends on what we're considering by best Gen. Are you saying the best game or the best Pokemon?

And even if you're speaking in terms of best game, are we talking mechanically or story-based?

My personal favorite game to play is Crystal. It just had the most stuff that I enjoyed in it. Of course the original 151 have a special place in my heart, and I actually liked most of the Gen 5 group (except Tympole...hate that little bastard)

I like gens 1 and 2 equally, then gens 3 and 4 are tied second, I'm not really much into gen 5.
