EDIT: It might behoove you to read this before responding if you don't want to look silly.

Yeah, that's right: no 'Other' option. I know its a sin and somewhat distorts the results of the poll, but I did my best to research games that are widely considered to be contenders for the 'best ever' title in gaming. I basically used the source I listed below, enacted a 'one entry per franchise rule', and these are my results.

So vote based on the options available, even if your personal favorite isn't here, what do you consider the best game of all time?

If your answer is 'none of the above', then vote for the game you think best deserves the title - or don't vote and complain about it.

(Source of my Research: http://www.filibustercartoons.com/games.htm )

EDIT:
Sorry if I wasn't clear, but the above choices are based on a very well put together representation of the typical industry 'top 10'. It is not my personal top 10 list. It is not even necessarily what I would consider the top 10 by most people's standards. It's an amalgamation of nearly every other reliable top 10 list from around the industry, and the poll is to determine what, out of the industry's standard top 10, do members of the Escapist deem to be most worthy of the title.

I'm not going to vote. I think that there are games out there better then all of those that I've played, so sorry, but no result from me.

I voted for Ocarina of Time, though I think Twilight Princess is much better.

But my personal "best game ever" is Mass Effect, and near gets Planescape: Torment.

Out of the options the two i enjoyed most were OoT and FF7 (hides behind flame shield)

I think to say 'Best of All Time' though is difficult because the games all have very different goals, i think comparing RE4 to Mario 64 is a little redundant because of the massive gulf between their main target audiences

Used the search bar, I couldn't find any reasonably recent 'poll' for best video game of all time, especially not something similar to this.

The closest thing to an RTS my source material showed as winning any 'best ever' polls or contests was Civilization III. Sorry, it's just kind of a niche genre.

Super Mario Bros 3 is still the best Mario in that series.
I agree, but surprisingly it's been on very few 'top' lists.

For the record my personal 'best game of all time' is Planescape: Torment, Super Metroid is only my second choice. But again, trying to find out what the escapist thinks about an overall 'best game ever' based on gaming's most popular contenders for the title as shown in media, polls, and lists over the last two decades.

Why are all but two old as shit and the other two old? They may be the classics, but that doesn't make them better than modern games.

South Korea would disagree. Do I have to bring Starcraft into this?

I don't believe there is a best video game of all time as people will have different opinions on what is the best video game of all time. There can be no single good game of all time.

Except for the Starcrafts, Warcrafts, World in Conflict, Command and Conquers, Company of Heroes, Dawn of Wars, Total Annihilations, Supreme Commanders, Total War series, Empire Earth, Age of Empires, Homeworld series, X-COM series, Codename: Panzers series, Blitzkrieg, Close Combat series, Combat Mission series, it's a real niche genre.

Mostly because, I think, most modern games have a lot of their roots in the titles listed above. There isn't a modern RPG around that hasn't borrowed original concepts from FF7, a puzzle game from Tetris, a shooter from GoldenEye or DOOM, etc.

So when you make a list like this, you tend to vote for the original material over the copies.

From those: Tetris. Easily. However, I don't think any of those are quite worthy of the title (though all good games in their own right), as the title can't be given out since people will inevitably disagree whatever the case. Your own poll is evidence of this, it would seem...
