Do you catch every pokemon you see and make a team as you go?

Do you catch the ones you like or that look useful and update your team as you go?

Or do you have your team pretty much planned out in advance and won't fill up the chosen pokemon's slot until it is caught?

I am the 3rd option, I usually pore over the pokemon available and have an idea of what ones I want in my party as I start. Then build the team as I go catching very few peripheral pokemon.
I don't like this method but with pokemon being recycled so many times I lost the joy of trying to catch 'em all that R/B and G/S gave me.

Hopefully B/W will bring this back with the new roster.

With the current generations I always look for a balanced team and try to get everything perfect... and then "awww it's so cute I've gotta have it!"

I tried to do the gotta catch em' all type deal in Heart Gold but eh, it's not for me. I just catch the ones I want to use for my team.

I pick the starter I think looks cutest. Then, I get a pokemon of the type that covers its weakness (obviously the one I think is cutest of that type), and repeat. Also I have a Zigzagoon because he can learn all the useless-in-battle HMs like Rock Smash and Cut.

I catch pretty much every pokemon I see, but only bother to train up the ones I plan to use in my team, which is usually planned out in advance.

Pick starter (normally Fire)
Train that
Capture everything I see, use them as HM slaves.
Keep training only my starter
Win game
Breed six Eeveelutions.
Train them all
Win game again.

I generally plan out my party in advance, but will eventually end up changing it multiple times as I myself change what I want my party to be or discover that certain 'mons might not be up to snuff... with a tendency to end up using the same Pokemon between games. My flyer is almost always Crobat now.

Heracross... you were so awesome for so long but just couldn't make the final cut. What happened to you? xD

Well I've only played the first two generations, during those I went for the Catch'em All strategy. I would try at least somewhat to get anything I didn't already have one of as I went along so I wouldn't have to go back hunting later on.

I'm actually leaning towards getting Black or White, haven't played one in a while so it will be like a fresh start again for me. Since it will only have new ones I've never seen before I will probably continue that way of playing.

As for my team, I choose the starter with the coolest looking fully evolved form usually, chose water first two time I believe. Thinking of the fire guy for B/W. As I got along I use pokemon half based on the ones I think look cool, and also look into their strengths and weaknesses. By the end I try and get a decently balanced team of all the strongest pokemon.

I beat the game, and then I decide what ones I want for my actual team. My first Hall of Fame always looks REALLY different from all the other ones...

Lol epic, how do you feel about the fire starter? I'm kind of sick of the Fire/Fighting starter, I was hoping for Fire/Dark.

i try to get a team of strong multi types for the most part, so im somewhat of a "route 15 fuck yeah fire/dark typeeeeeeee" but it usually takes me half the game to get a full team, so im somewhat of a cheap kid when it comes to poke ball catching.

Along with starting with fire to kill grass early on then get pokemon who can put others to sleep.

Honestly I don't know much at all about Black+White. I saw the pictures of the starters and their evolved forms but didn't bother checking types or anything. If it's another Fire/Fighting I'll probably choose Water because of the awesome final form it has.

And yeah, I breed six eeveelutions.

Espeon
Umbreon
Jolteon
Flareon
Vaporeon
Leafeon

*sigh* What I would give for another slot so I could carry Glaceon too. Sometimes I'll breed Glaceon too but s/he always ends up sat in my computer, wasting away. Espeon's always the centrepiece of the team though.

Get all 3 starters and then catch as many as possible. Though I do typically stick with a 6 favourites throughout the game.

I honestly would Glaceon instead of Leafeon, you have vaporeon for Ground/Rock and jolteon for water. This leaves you a bit open from electric because you have no one to defend it but Glaceon will kill dragons.

Gotta Catch Them All....

And By 'Catch' I mean, evolve.

And by 'all' I mean, Eevee's.
