I picked RPG because out of all the genres up there, the games I tout as my favorites tend to belong in that genre. But I have a love/hate relationship with the RPG. I can't stand JRPGs (basically I view them as Action games with turn-based-combat). And even some western RPGs have really been disappointing me lately. I used to adore the Elder Scrolls series, but Morrowind was really the peak and Oblivion was just a flat-out disappointment. Fallout 3 was, too (Oblivion--now with mutants!!), but it's slowly growing on me as I look at it less like a Fallout game and more as an end-of-the-world shooter-RPG hybrid. The Fable games are more simulators than RPGs, and while I tout Mass Effect as the best game of this console gen, it still has a lot of elements of a third person shooter.
Don't get me wrong, I think the combat of ME was a great improvement over the turn-based combat of most other BioWare titles (and this from a girl who lists Baldur's Gate as her favorite game ever). The problem with turn-based combat is that it's a throwback to the old tabletop days. But much as I love my pen-and-paper D&D, a video game is not a tabletop title. If you can take advantage of real-time combat, you should. It's more immersive.
I think the point of this rant is to say I play a lot of RPGs, and the ones I like, I really like. The ones that disappoint me, though...I tend to loathe.
