The only one I've played was MGS 3, so I can't really say. I've always wanted to play the others, but never got around to it.

Not gonna go through all the stuff in this thread, just gonna say what I think of the MGS storylines.

Personally, my favourite is the first one. It was the most grounded of the games and felt the least redundant/contrived of them all. It didn't start getting into serious anime territory like MGS2, and it didn't obsess with women like MGS3 and 4 did. Gods, did we REALLY need the "grab her breast and electrocute her" scene in MGS3? I think that was that and the "let's have Snake watch someone undress" scene where they introduced whats-her-face (damn it I can't remember her name) that put the seed of doubt into my mind about the game. Before that, I was actually enjoying MGS3.

I won't even touch MGS4 with radiation suit and tongs. I know enough about it to get the gist and even that I think I would like some brain bleach for. I'll just go back to pretending the first one was all there was, and that Snake hooks up with Meryll and Ottocon's sister isn't killed 20 minutes after she's introduced. GODS don't even get me started on how pissed I was that they killed her off... ONLY TO HAVE TO BRING SOMEONE JUST LIKE HER BACK IN for MGS4.. And the whole "Hal was sleeping with his mother" thing.. gods was that unnecessary.

I loved them until about 3/4 though MGS2; when you're fighting inside Arsenal and the Colonel and Rose start going nuts. By the final boss monologue, I was completely lost, sick of watching, and just wanted to play. Just as I was about to hit "skip", the boss says "OhByTheWay:IKilledYourParents". And I'm like "wh-what? That has no ties to the story!"

The following stories have all done the same. Trying desperately to force character connections where none are required. Long, drawn-out conversations about events completely inconsequential to the story. Plot after plot crammed in with the main to give some illusion of character depth where none exists.

I don't mind bad story if it doesn't affect the gameplay. And MGS4 had PHENOMENAL gameplay. But try playing though without watching a cutscene. For all those long "loading..." screens, you maybe get about 8 hours of actual gameplay because of the damn movies.

The storylines are ridiculously convoluted, and filled with reams of redundant dialogue, and seems to have a problem with the whole "show, don't tell" thing.

BUT WHY DO I LOVE IT SO MUCH

The very beginning of Otacon's exposition about Deterrence had me going for a few minutes, than when I realised he wasn't gonna stop anytime soon, I just stop caring .

As the games kept coming and going, the unbelievable dialogue and plots made me care less and less. They just take themselves seioursly enough to be ridiculous.

The gameplay is usually great, that's what kept me going.

Kojima wants to make movie.s And he's using us as guinea pigs. Not cool, but I hope he's at least learning from it... though avid fans glorify him instead of giving constructive criticism. So that's a dim hope for sure.

Did anyone actualy understand that story line?

I think I got lost somewhere between the somewhat annoying shooting mechanics, the boring as hell "cutscenes"(movies) and the overall convoluted style of the story arch, which all caused me to stop playing the series a while ago.

I love Metal Gear Solid! It's one of my favorite series, and this includes how I love it's super-convoluted storyline!

I mean, has anyone ever read Revolver Ocelot's entry on the Metal Gear Wiki? It's longer than most REAL-LIFE people and celebrity entries!

P.S: Ocelot is the bestestest!

The story as a whole is pretty awesome. Its just that individual components of it broken down into the separate games often are somewhat confusing.

MGS is a brilliant series. My favorite is the first one, simply because the immense pleasure I got from playing it has been unrivaled by any other game. Its story was also the least complicated, and yet thoroughly engrossing.

It's probably been said before, but I love them. They're awesome but ridiculous all at the same time.

That link is the best send up of it I've seen yet.

Not love or hate just confusion. I did 'love' MGS1 but I 'hate' MGS2. The others are kind of meh but its all about the gameplay in that series for me.

MGS2 has one of my favorite storylines in any game ever. MGS3 has a somewhat meh storyline but the ending (in large part due to the excellent characterization of the boss and snake throughout the game) was perfect. MGS4 was confusing as hell to me; but, I've only played through it once so I will hold judgement.

None of the poll options apply to me! I don't love it, nor do I hate it, but I do care.

Bottom line is the games are likable, and my favourite parts are when it breaks the 4th wall, but boy are they poorly written, and I have to wonder if those who hold it as "the best game plot ever period" has ever read a proper book.

MGS4 was great fun, but how many times do we need to hear the goofy arms dealer say "the war economy".
Not to mention a character that literally shits himself multiple times through the game.

It wants to blend this silliness, but then tries to be serious, and in my opinion it fails miserably.

I love the stories...while I'm playing the games. When I think back, though, they never make any sense, and I can never explain them very well.

I think the story is convoluted. The amount of cutscenes in MGS4 were ridiculous. MGS3 had it about right, imo.
