You know a story is too convoluted and ridiculous when they release a downloadable encyclopedia/timeline thing just to explain what the hell is going on.

Hell, i knew it was too convoluted and ridiculous when MGS4 characters started giving what basically amounts to lengthy powerpoint presentations to explain what's going on. That's some awful videogame storytelling right there.

I love them, but only because they're so confusing and ridiculous that figuring out what the hell is going on is extremely satisfying.

MGS4 is Twilight for boys. It's that bad.
Old thread is old, but this quote made me lol. I wish MGS4 would die in a fire (the other entries are leagues better), and this is about on par with that sentiment.

The only one I've played was MGS 3, so I can't really say. I've always wanted to play the others, but never got around to it.
you can buy the MGS:essentials pack for 20 bucks it includes Metal Gear Solid 1-3
Oh, I would, but I don't have my PS2 with me currently. Also, I don't know of many places that sell it down here.

I haven't played any of the games, and don't intend to.
I'm not assuming it's bad, I just don't feel like playing it. I already have 4 unfinished games, and that comes after my massive period of Morrowind I'm in at the moment.

I find it boring and uninteresting.

But you know what, the gameplay and cutscenes are put together in a way that makes my brain... work.

MGS4 will have a great place of inspiration for me if I ever built my dream game for some reason.

Your post made me lol. MGS4 is probably one of the best next gen games to come out.

I really don't know why people hate the cutscenes from MGS4, I thought that brought gaming to a new level of storytelling.

Glad you enjoyed it. ;) I admit I was a bit sensational in that post and I do think MGS4 is a good game (gameplay is fun, production values are obscene, etc.), but as I've said elsewhere, the story drove me batshit insane. As a Metal Gear fanboy I think I'm just speaking out of hurt, but for all its incredible innovation and polish, I think the series (storywise) was more cohesive without it.

I love the stories...while I'm playing the games. When I think back, though, they never make any sense, and I can never explain them very well.
they do make sense. I could explain it but its best to read MGS4 data base or play throught all 4 MGS games to understand it the best.
Telling me that the story makes sense and then directing me to read through an entire database dedicated to explaining the story doesn't really convince me.

They are convoluted and sometimes ridiculous, and I've only played Metal Gear Solid 4, but I loved the story.

I have only finished MGS4, and just started MGS3 and really like the story in both of them.

I played the first hour or so of Metal Gear Solid and liked it, and played about the first five minutes of MGS2 (Snake's part) and thought it was crap.
Yeah, that pretty much sums up my opinion on the games, and as for story, each game has its own theme and setting, which mixes up the long, twisty plot quite well, so, yeah, I like.

It's hilariously preachy, overwritten and filled with hilariously bad drama.
Doens't stop people from enjoying it as a piece of gaming history though.
Because we all know YOU LIKE TO PLAY CASTLEVANIA~

It is one of the only series that has actually revolved around the story. It is also intriguing and keeps my interest. I even completely enjoyed all 8 hours of cutscenes in MGS4.

I don't love it... I don't hate. But I do care about it. Hmmm... It's a pretty good story line. The cut scenes kinda take forever... but it's alright.
