PSN is the one that charges for auto updates.
They charge for auto updates? Man, that sucks.
Ya nothing like being charged so you won't be inconvenienced when they fix their rushed games.
So how is paying for mandatory game updates any different to paying for Xbox live? :/

Personally, I HATE XBL. It's total bullshit that you have to pay for Multiplayer, Updates, and Other game features which are all available for FREE on PC. It's just another way of Microsoft to stick their hands into our pockets, as if they didn't have enough money already.
Pretty much, yeah. I refuse to pay for it, no matter how cool a game looks, and even if it's a 360 exclusive that relies on multiplayer I will not pay for it.

Who said anything about paying for updates? You are paying for a program that will update it while you are sleeping so you don't have to wait to play your game. Rather than not paying and it updating when you put in the disc when you go to play. The updates themselves are free for both. But to me patches are their problem, their fuck upo so why should I have to pay for them to fix their fuck ups without inconveniencing me where XBL I am paying for MP, discount's and early access to demos. Something that enhances my gametime, not fixing their mistakes.

You don't actually have to pay for updates. And besides, the cost of an Xbox plus a years Gold membership is still cheaper than a PS3 or a decent spec PC.
Remember you also have to pay for an extended warranty on the Xbox otherwise it'll be useless to you after a year.

But you still have to pay, right? So PS3ers can't really use the 'we get free online gaming' card. And waiting ten seconds for your game to update is hardly an inconvenience.

It's a given that it'll break out of warranty anyway, so it probably isn't worth it.

Totally and completely worthless as a paid service. I flat refuse to pay for multiplayer on one of many gaming devices I have.

No sale.

Yeah, you can expect 3-4 years out of it with a good PSP.

Xbox 360 S - $300
3 year PSP - $80
4 year Gold Subscription ('cause you'll buy another year before it finally breaks) - $240

= $620 for 3.5 years of gaming

PS3 Slim - $300, total cost, for 8-10 years of gaming, although your controller will likely break meaning you'll have to buy a new one once or twice down the road.

That's the big difference, with the 360 your controllers will outlast the system, and years from now there will be a ton of Xbox 360 controllers only useful with a PC without a single working 360 left in the world.

I still don't get how the PSN 'paying for updates' thing works though. How much is that costing you?

It should be free to play online. That feature should be included with Silver, as Xbox LIVE is run through a peer to peer network, at no cost to MS.

The features that the live subscription fees pay for (that silver users have access to) should be what Gold subscriptions are for.

The fact they charge for online multiplayer is absolute bullshit, as they have no dedicated servers. It's also bullshit the money they get by fooling people with this tactic pays for features available to non-paying Silver users. (Demos, videos, etc)

I only got Gold as a gift. I will not be renewing until they get some damn servers, then it will be worth paying for.

In terms of the community, it's pretty much 80% pricks, who are either achievement hunting elitists, or 12 year olds wanting some chocolate milk, or some fratboy pricks (American supremacists/racists), or some chav tossers.

It's a solid platform and I've met alot of interesting people over it. Besides, people are more tolerable of you using your mic on live.

I don't have an Xbox, but it seems okay, but without the fees it would be better.
I prefer solo anyways...

yeah I mean it's not like online servers cost money, or DLC takes labor hours to create.

Matchmaking costs nothing for micro$oft. And they can make money off DLC for cover the server costs.

PS+ will automatically update your firmware, while with PSN you have to manually do it, therefore if an update has been released and you haven't turned your console on for a couple days, before you can do anything you need to install the update. PS+ will do it in the background, so you won't notice it.

I have a gold subscription. It's not worth it. Especially if you live outside the USA. Multiplayer is free everywhere else, and all that other crap (i.e. facebook) can be used on a computer (or even a phone) anyway.

There is nothing wrong with it, other than the people. But I doubt PC and PSN can brag about their commuinitys.

I have an xbox, but I don't pay for Gold. I can get all the updates and DLC I want; the only thing I'm missing out on is multiplayer, which I will never take advantage of anyway.

We can brag that we don't pay for multiplayer, and we get real servers rather than peer to peer connections.
