I think anyone who comes onto the Internet and brags about their guns should have their ownership rights revoked. This would effectively ban all firearms, as every gun owner I've ever encountered has been an insufferable prick about it.

People are bat-shit insane. I can understand having guns if they are relevant to your profession, or you are a collector, but if you are really so concerned with self-defence, you'd be better off with a knife, or a bat, partly because knives rarely fire out of your hand at incredible speed, bouncing around off various surfaces, potentially killing innocent by-standers, and also because pulling a gun just puts everyone on high alert; unless you are right next to a corner you can't safely run away from the man with the gun (it's a ranged weapon), and you can't just stand there (he's got a freaking gun!). What do you think is going to happen if someone pulls a gun? Rainbows and sugary sweets are going to magically appear? My arse they will!

OT: I think guns in the hands of the public just make things worse. It'd be better to put more effort into cracking down on violent crimes (those people that would get and use guns even if they weren't legal), thereby minimising the threat from other people having guns, and reducing your need for them. By all means, let the public own guns for hunting, sport, to have as unloaded wall-mounts, etc, but 'self-defence' is a self-fulfilling prophecy: "I need to be able to defend myself!" "Why?" "Because everyone else has guns!"

Also, another point, public places are there for everyone, so the rules need to appeal to the lowest common denominator (or close enough), which means no nudity, no loud and unwarranted noises (by all means, yell if you get startled, or to get someone's attention, but don't sit there screaming, or playing your crappy music at twice the necessary volume), and no death-tools! The public spaces are there to be used by everyone fairly, your private residence is where you can do all those other things.

For my opinion watch Penn & Teller's Bullshit on Gun control, that's roughly how I feel about gun control.

Edit: Also it really annoys the shit out of me that lefties think that as soon as someone touches a gun they automatically go insane and try and kill everyone. Okay most people are pretty stupid/sheepish, not saying I'm not, but almost all of them have a degree of common sense guys.

The problems with the left are:
1. They do not used the brain that God gave them.
2. They do not use logic or critical thinking skills.
3. They are control freaks.
4. They are elitist.
5. They do not trust the common people.

I love guns. I own a couple of pistols and a shotgun or two. My friend has a AR-15 and we shoot it at his house all the time (he lives way out in the country). I hunt when I get the chance. So yeah I like guns. You need to add another choice between the first and second options. I think semi-automatic assault rifles are ok as long as you have had training and have a license and I also think that guns for hunting are ok, but we don't need fully automatic light machine guns. Also, I live in NC just like the OP and know a lot more people who dislike guns than I do that like them.

I have a bit of a gun collection myself (and a concealed carry permit), and I'm actually for a form of gun control that requires licensing to own firearms. The second amendment was for an earlier time, when cities the size we have now simply didn't exist... and a vast majority of people back then grew up around firearms.
Now, things are different. Inner-city populations are mostly timid and sheltered, many people are raised with an irrational fear of guns. It would take decades of mandatory firearms education to change that... so I say if you wanna own a firearm, go take a class. Learn how to use it, what you're allowed by law to do with it, and get a nice little laminated license for it... then you can buy it.
This is typical of liberal thinking. I have gun and you can't. You can't be trusted to have a gun. No minority should have firearms and so on. Only the elite and people in power should be allow to have guns.

The thing about rights is that the government can't decide who can have guns or not. Who can talk freely or not. Who can vote or not.

Who decide who is allow to own firearms? Who decide if you're smart or not? You? The government?

Here the thing about liberals. They are all for freedoms but the first thing the do is limit freedoms. If you believe in freedom you believe that all people no mater what their race, religion, how smart or dumb they are have the same rights.

Just incase anyone wanted to learn some stuff:

I think all who profess to be on the left should really watch this as Penn and Teller are about as far left as America gets and even they think guns are okay. They have good, logical arguments and they deliver them extremely well.

The difference between the right and left is property rights. If you're more for property rights you're more toward the right. If you're less for property rights than you're more to toward the left.

You can't called your self a right if you're for big government, big control.

The things about leftist that they think more government control means more freedom? You can't have more freedom if you have big government. Big government only lead to dictatorship.

Not necessarily I only believe in big government in an economic sense.
As in I'd feel more comfortable with more regulations and monitoring of economic growth so we don't go through these retarded recessions again. But the way you're saying it is fascism only comes from big government, which is wrong. For example, George W. Bush's America. He tried reducing the government but that lead to a whole different kind of dictatorship, with corporations ruling what the government can and can't do.

so many stupid arguments on this topic, for and (mostly) against, i don't see any real point retreading the whole thing.
basically, free country, should be able to do things so long as you don't endanger others, etc etc blah blah, and there ARE responsibilities that come with gun ownership..

i will however share an anecdote from an american on another forum:
basically after being questioned on the safety of leaving a whole bunch of loaded guns around his house, he claimed all guns should be kept loaded as people treat them with more respect and are downright cavalier with unloaded weapons.
apparently he believes this because a friend of his put a pistol to his head and pulled the trigger to show it was unloaded (hint: it wasn't*)
natural selection..

*fucks me why you wouldn't take two seconds to clear the gun

No if you believe in government control than you're a leftist. If you believe in a share society than you're a leftist. There is a hard line between right and left.

Your economic view is Keynesian model. Keynesian economic model have never work before and it is the main reason why the world economy is screw up. The opposite of Keynesian is Austrian model. Austrian economic model is the only model that work and proven to work. Austrian basically state that the government let the economy do what it wants.

But didn't we let the economy do what it want and then everyone invested in these extremely unstable property bubbles for short term profits because there were no restrictions?

I like Britain's way. You can only have shotguns and rifles, and you can only have them for shooting pests (on farms) and hunting (though I don't agree with hunting.) You also can't carry them about town and have to keep them in a safe.

The idea that in America anyone around me could have a gun? Gives me the heebie-jeebies thinking about it.
I live in Denmark, and we have the exact same system.

Even our police officers don't all carry guns, how their system of which police officers should carry guns where works, that I do not know. :)

I'm saying that people should first be evaluated for psychological issues.
Unstable people should never be allowed to have a firearm. (Or any weapon)

So yes, I am for the government deciding who gets to have a gun.

What about a knife? Someone close by could just as easily draw a knife and stab you as they could pull a gun and shoot you. More likely to get away from the scene as well. The fear that someone MIGHT have a gun is irrational if you do not equally fear the blade that may be a mere foot from your back. Even then such paranoia is irrational. Simply because one is armed dosen't mean they will kill someone at random. Most people aren't psychotic killers on the last thread of humanity they have. Most people with a gun aren't willing to kill someone. If you polled every citizen in the US if they were mentally ready to take a life just because they had a gun in their hand they would say no.

Another thing not all of us are religious zealots praying for rain or for god to fix the economy.
Easy buddy, I didn't say that everyone might pull a gun and shoot me, I was meerly saying the idea of it made me uneasy. Also, you can't carry a knife in Britain either.
^Correction, you can, its just illegal.

Criminals don't care and I've had knives pulled on me before. Brit speaking here.
