JRPGs: Like WRPGs, except everyone hates them!

Bah, if one tickles my fancy, I'll buy it. If one doesn't tickle my fancy, I won't buy it. It works the same way with Western RPGs, FPSs, MMOs, RTSs...Damn, we reduce a lot of game genres into three-letter acronyms, don't we?

What do you think of Japanese Role Play Games and why?

I personally hate everything anime (except for Miyazaki films, but they are refreshingly creative and he doesn't kill his franchises by turning out dozens of sequels, the story line is easy to understand and doesn't try to confuse the audience) but I occasionally find myself buying FF games and their ilk.

Anyway, I don't really care about what I think, I want to know what everyone else thinks.
I really only play the ones where I can instantly tell what gender my fucking protagonist is. If I have to think about it... then no... it's not the game for me. I understand that I'm probably missing out on a lot of good games... but that's just the way I feel. Really don't want to play the metro sexual role, buddy.

Generally I don't like them; with very few exceptions.
But I don't hate them, either, I just don't care.
I prefer Western RPGs.

I like them, simply because I'm not a fan of open ended choose your own path sort of games, aka WRPGs, I just want it to tell me a story
Amen to that. Otherwise I get bored on what I'm supposed to do next. My favorite series is Tales 'cause more often than naught they do their job extremely well.

Considering that most of them have the same story ((Evil Guy/Corp tryign to rule world, efeminate male lead, a few good broods)), All of them feel like the last. Not a big fan of turn-based action, but the few that take innovation to the concept ((The addition system in Legend of Dragoon is a good example)) get good marks in my book. Not a huge fan of JRPGs, but there a good few.
You, my friend should, try one of the Tales series, if you haven't already. Their battle system is far beyond turn-based.

JRPGs are not bad but they almost always fall into one archetype or another a.k.a. amniesiac protaganist/emo haired, retardedly deep thoughts idiot. WRPGs always seem more open in their stories and characters because the Western culture has churned out many varying mythos while the Japanese culture only has a few variations to work with. Again, their not bad games, just a difference in what our cultures are like. Also, while anime and JRPGs do have connections to each other, please don't lump them together. There are some incredible animes out there, such as Miyazaki's works.

hmm.. personaly not a fan of Jrpg. Its the style i dont like, I enjoy role play and like the good anime just dont like the grindy style turn based random encounter fest that is the average jrpg.

On a side note me and a old mate have a saying in reference to ladies we may have met....

"She was just a Japanese roleplay" - ie random encounter followed by some grinding, taking it in turns and finaly a feeling of acomplishment.

Four months ago I would have said that JRPGs are bland and repetitive.

My mind has since been changed since however, based on the suggestions I got from this forum in fact. I still prefer WRPGs more, but JRPGs can be a fresh breath of air with their distinctive style. Then grinding in them usually puts me off for some time, but if the story is good and gameplay mechanic is decent, I see no reason to play the game (just like with almost every other game).

I buy a JRPG every now and then and play them surprisingly often. Chrono Trigger is still one of my favourite games. But I do happen to be a RPG fan; p&p, WRPG or JRPG, it matters not. If it's halfway decent, I'll likely play it sooner or later.

Also, have you tried Chrono Trigger or Earthbound? Especially the second one, even Yahtzee likes that.

it's very important that if you read this, you pay close attention to exact wording.

Most JRPG's tend to focus more on story and character development whereas western RPGs have always sought to actually have you play a role in a much larger enviroment. That being said, most JRPG characters follow the same goddamned archetype and basically never really develop at all leading to strange and illogical choices and decisions the characters end up making simply for an attempt at showing their character "grow". Most western RPG's on the other hand, have absolutely no real character development (for the main characters that is) and basically give you a world to take your drab soul less character out to explore (but you get to customize his appearance!). Bottom line for me, if you're a whiny 14 year old who has no time to devote to making a character they might actually want to play as then JRPG's should be right up your alley (minus a few of the true classics like chrono trigger or the more recent lost oddyssey). If you're into living in a fantasy world vicariously through somebody who doesn't speak or whose actions are squarely dictated by you (but still not amounting to much in the way of affecting the story) then Western RPG's are the way to go. Personally, I prefer the older JRPG's, before the square enix merger, before the forming of mistwalker studios, and before the only good modern JRPG's were part of the MEGATEN series (again, lost odyssey not withstanding), but on modern consoles generally play Western RPG's (Mass effect, and FALLOUT 3 come to mind). Also, japanese pop culture is to0 insanely sugary sweet for me, I live in japan, it permeates EVERYTHING, and is really nothing more then an excuse to cover up their blatant perversions (as westerners perceive it anyway). That being said, japanese classical culture is probrably the most beautiful thing any society has ever produced.

I totally forgot about the Tales series. I've only played the Gamecube one, but it was one of the best JRPG's ive played in a while. Thanks for reminding me.

I find that ironic since the game was based off of WWII.
No shit, Sherlock.

But if you're one of those hardcore WWII historical nut-jobs I would understand your dislike of this game.
My interest in im WWII is based on the fact that my country and my family was involved in it. For this reason many dutch people got their facts straight about it, enthusiast or not. After all, we celebrate our liberation and mourn our fallen yearly.

CkretAznMan said:
Then again I would find people like you to complain just about everything that's related to WWII as pure crap. However if you don't, then you're just a hypocrite.
Not really, since the mayority of these games are based on historical facts instead of having a moral ridden anime sauce with chunks of clichéd characters and bad writing poured over them. Ridiculing the whole thing. And the best part is: Its done by a country who we all know whose bratwurst theyve been munching on back then. Talk about hypocracy!
