I've had my license to carry a handgun since I was legally able to do so. Indiana is pretty loose with their gun laws so as long as I'm not in a school, Inside a casino, or in an airport I can and usually do legally carry.

Gun, if not available, knife. A sword is pretty much useless nowadays, unless you're in combat with other people who have swords.
Just out of curiosity, why would a sword be any less useful than a knife?
a knife is concealable and easier to wield (lightweight, faster strikes etc)
That doesnt make a sword useless, surely? Just because a knife is more useful...Its like saying a broom is useless compared to a mop, because its not wet.
Well, for the sake of mopping, yes a broom would be useless. Typically, swords do not work so well for quick street combat.

Knife.
Swords are amazing, and as a fencer I know my way around one well, but I have to say that in this day and age you would be killed long before you got to use one.
A knife takes the same finesse and skill and makes in concealable and quick. A truly elegant weapon; if you really felt like it, you could take out even a few people if they didn't suspect it and then hide, and all be too quick for coordinated response.

I am working on getting a concealed weapon license and usually carry a knife with me, just in case. I had a friend who died from being mugged and stabbed, he had no way to defend himself.

Swords are amazing weapons, and in a fight with blades hell yes I would choose one over a knife. But as far as just carrying a weapon just in case a knife can be hidden, it can serve as a tool for any number of things, you can whip it out and strike unexpectedly, and if absolutely necessary you could still use it in a direct fight.

I own three swords, all of them blunt. These are purely for 'recreational' purposes, as I partake in the sport of fencing.

I don't carry a weapon, but if I ever move to a city, I'm going to get a concealed weapons permit and carry a pistol in a holster (assuming the job I'd have permits it as well).

My preferred weapon of choice is an M4A1, since I don't own one (yet) I just keep a 3 1/2" knife on me. I doubt I'll ever need it, but better safe than sorry. (Though I really need to sharpen the thing)

i don't carry any weapons, why you may ask.

because if i get arrested by the police i will go to prison for carrying a concealed weapon (be it charged with carrying a concealed weapon with intent to endanger life, possession of an offensive weapon or just plain old going equipped), its the law over here.

IRL? I carry a Bowie knife when I go hiking... just for some semblance of protection against angry wild life. And bear spray. Never had to use either, though.

That's it, though. No guns, swords, or whatever else. No real interest to change that either.

I want the local laws to rearrange so that I can carry a can of Mace. Or a taser.

Currently, I'm left with my hands, feet and teeth, and a nice long jail sentence because damn you if you try to defend yourself. Makes me feel all safe when I walk home at night.

Fist weapons, staves, spears and polearms, or Serge's swallow weapon from Chrono Cross.
Also, crowbar satellites. Nothing says "PWNED" like a crowbar liquifying your head after being released in the upper atmosphere.

I'd prefer to have a gun at hand. Especially after having been the victim of crimes. I don't have the needed patience to sit and wait for the police that will never turn up or do anything to help me if I get in a bad situation. So, I'd prefer to be armed. Especially because I live in Denmark, where the police and justice system is pretty much useless with a big fat U.

I recently got a very nice Oakeshott XVIIIa sword (Windlass Verneuil) that I like a whole lot. So I guess swords are my weapon of choice.

Though strictly speaking I'd rather Just Shoot Him than engage in close-quarters if I could help it.

Guns. With Lethal Ammo. In my country, people tend to get mugged by criminal scum that wield baseball bats, knives, non-lethal guns. In my line of work I am equipped with a gun (a 7.65mm cal. gun, I know it sucks and it's an age old piece of shit by every standard one can name and it isn't too effective at long ranges, more than 15m) BUT when a dude points a knife or a non-lethal gun at me and I pull out that rusty piece of shit (that fires real bullets), pretend to get trigger happy, they tend to gtfo as fast as they can.

Needs gunsword option.

Also the poll seems at odds with the questions asked in the OP. For the record I don't carry a weapon because I'm in Australia so no guns just carried around on you all the time and knives seem more likely to get me into trouble as I have no training/experience using them offensively.

Also I can't be bothered, the worst I've seen are brief fist fights and I doubt I'll see much worse.
I was stabbed by knife in a bar fight. You don't worry about it until it happens.

I carry a gun, I started carrying it because I worked in the wilderness for lengthy times. While it's not a constant worry, and I never actually needed it, I would rather have a firearm and not need it then run afoul of some animal with no defense against it.

Not it's mostly habit. I have a Glock .40 S&W subcompact that fits nicely into my pocket and I carry it most places it's legal to carry.
