Battlemage (warrior/mage). Because nothing livens up a swordfight like a fireball in their face.

Well, my two highest leveled classes in WoW were Shaman and Warrior, and I got a lot of good praise for both tanking and healing, but my Shammy was higher and I got more praise for healing at higher level dungeons, so I'll assume I'm better at that. So to answer the OP, a melee fighter with off-healing capability.

Wow, a lot of Sword Mages, I suppose that is a useful class....eh then again I prefer just plain old spell casting....

either in game or a D&D roleplaying game I always end up being the Tank! I don't know how. we even had a character made up randomly and it was a tank!

If I can find a healer we could make a magnifecent duo.

Mage
I would like to play a fighter/melee with magic but that's not possible right.
Well It could be possible, I suppose if you were a Half-Elf and you use his abilty to gain a skill from other classes, I suppose you could be a fighter with a little magic support....But the main class for that is Sword-Mage

No I find a Bard to be useful, but only if the party has three or more characters, below that and they won't work.

BTW Try A Dragon Born Dragon Socorer, it works very nicely
I have no experience with tabletop D&D; I was just referring to D&D-based computer games.
They SHOULD get more love in more games. Neverwinter Nights 2 probably has the best selection of Bard abilities I've seen, though Icewind Dale had a decent one.
They SHOULDN'T be as bad as they are in a lot of these games: "jack-of-all-trades" doesn't mean "fails at all tasks."

Still, sometimes the bard comes out on top: In Shadows of Undrentide (NWN expansion), I had to kill a bunch of golems, couldn't go toe-to-toe with them and didn't have an effective ranged weapon. The damage from Curse Song, however, seems to ignore armor and damage resistance. So I'd use Curse Song, run away until it wore off, use it again. It was a huge pain and took forever, but I eventually killed them all.
That's right: I literally sang golems to death.
And that's one reason I still play Bards.

I choose whatever allows me to, in my opinion, exploit the system most. This basically means the one who can sustain, avoid, or recover the most damage in a battle.
Ah Min/maxing
It's actually a very convenient way to see how balanced a game is. If you choose one character which can take almost no damage and you use him to wipe the board, then it's obvious that there is an imbalance.

In my experience, this generally means Clerics are very overpowered and underrated. They take a mace and bludgeon enemies to death until they're almost worn out. Then they take health potions to restore themselves, and keep bludgeoning them. When out of health potions, they use healing spells. When out of mana, they use mana potions to recover the mana and in effect recover their healing spells. When out of mana, they scavenge their kills for whatever potions they've dropped and continue bludgeoning. Ultimately, a cleric will need to retreat to recover himself about half as much as any other character will, and then the process will repeat again. This guy's around, you ain't killing anyone.

This pretty much culminates when looking at even a fairly well-balanced game, like Dungeons and Dragons online, because I haven't even mentioned the offensive spells which allow them to make up for the limited melee range of their hammer/mace/bludgeon. This culminates when you reach level 13 in that game, and at that point you learn Blade Barrier, which basically means you can solo any quest available.

In short, fighters are damage-dealers, stealthers are damage-dealers, rangers, mages, and whatever else are all almost exclusively damage dealers... but clerics are the damage-dealers which repair themselves. Like some auto-repairing machine of war.

And they KICK ASS for it.

If your talking WOW I'm all over Druid. Something about the schitzo way you can play as one entertains me. You can do everything heal, tank, or DPS.

But if you mean single RPG then Spellcaster all the way.

DPS.

Ranged DPS to be precise.

In WoW my main charcters where Ret Paladin (Heavy DPS) and Corruption Warlock (DPS and DOT).

So often Ill roll Caster/Thief in RPG's.
