In my core group of friends pretty much everyone is the smart guy, but if there was a particular role I had to fill it would be a cross between "smart guy" and "smartass."

What I will be remains to be seen, I'd probably be sarcastic inbetween battles while ultimately serious during said battles. Somehow become leader during the final third of the story and will ultimately get everyone else killed because that's just how I roll.

I, in reality, have tremendous psychological identity issues, a narcissism thing where I only think of myself and cannot for the hell of me figure out which voice is mine... It's quite the bother sometimes.
I truly don't know who I am and thus I am who the people around me make me. I can be a full on Champion type leader, leading my men(friends) to success and bringing us up as a whole. The quiet athletic guy with a huge ego.
Or my personal favorite, the willy charmer with a strong sense for women, but of course, I only let that out with beautiful women and become more altruistic. (Granted in truth, I think I may be quite superficial... which will make me grow old alone... Meh, I haven't met one who wouldn't annoy me to death after a year of living together... so whatever.)
You know what the worst part is? Not only do I not know myself, but other people puzzle me... They are just unstable... With all my flaws, I look at them and I see only more flaws, it makes me wonder why we even want to exist in a society of people who want to be liked when clearly, they are not being themselves, thus are tricking us into liking the illusion of a personality they are putting off.
All in all, I guess the "role" you play is completely up to you since a personality is an abstract thing we attribute ourselves in our vanity.

Leader, at least between my three other friends and me. Our group, however, would be composed of a leader, two smart guys (or one smart guy and one smart girl), one lancer and one tagalong kid (the lancer's little sister).
Lets see....I'd fill myself in as a combination of the smart(ass) guy and auxillary. For the most part I function well where/when I'm needed, but rarely am I a necessary part (ergo auxillary) and I'm pretty good at keeping out of trouble/causing trouble for others, mostly because trouble means more work for me and that causes problems for my auxillary side. I'm auxillary because I WILL try to get out of whatever I can because, an auxillary part by nature is normally unneeded and is only used when it is used to supplement or replace somethign else. I'm helpful, I don't want to be, no one seems to understand that.
We have a group of smart guys (each given we have a talent in different things), the actual leader is yet to be determined, a couple of lancers, a jerkass with a heart of gold, a chick (the only one that kind of acts like one anyway), the support (that would be me), and a team mom.
Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit o.o Not sure why people think smart guy = sarcastic dick <.<
Anyways I'm going with 'other' and picking 'Neutral Stupid' guy. But more corrupt ... as in capitalise on everybody's efforts and just as the team is about to hit paydirt, change sides and help the enemy get one up on my original compatriots <.<

Anyway, I too am confused as to why everyone seems to equate "Smart Guy" with "smartass". Read the article in the link, people! If you think you're the smartass snarky person you're more likely the Lancer/"Second in Command" type to the Leader's more serious personality.
That being said, I would place myself as a Leader in my usual group of friends with a touch of Lancer whenever someone else is in charge of events.
