I don't mind amnesia when done right. PS:T was done right. Often it's not... I can't actually think of a recent game that's used it, though, so there's not much to annoy there. Are there a bunch of recent games that have used amnesia, then, or are we all still annoyed at the SNES Final Fantasies?

The Ultima Series -- speaking of old games -- really pulled off the 'Chosen One' idea during its middle trilogy. Having a game where you MADE yourself the Chosen One, followed by games where people refused to believe you were the Chosen one (and weren't later convinced by your deeds of daring do) where being the Chosen one means you accidentally destroyed innocent worlds, et cetera, et cetera ... well, to me, this worked quite well.

But in the end, what annoys me is the flavor of betrayal where the guy I'm working for was just using me all along and GASP is the final boss! Not so much that it's annoying itself, but it's just so overdone. Done well, sure, sometimes; but horribly overdone nonetheless. It just doesn't count as a plot twist any more.

I hate the "Your brother/sister/father/best friend is the ultimate evil villain who you have to take down" plot
I agree.....except for
Mother 3
. That was just plain tearjerking.

I never have a problem with amnesia. It's always fun to think up some sick, twisted background for my character until it is revealed, if at all. If it does get revealed, I tend to ignore it anyways...

I can't stand the "It's all a dream" thing. It's just another way of saying "Everything you did was useless, and there was absolutely no point."

The main antagonist is really [insert some guy mentioned briefly here].
The second in command kills the main antagonist and takes over as the main antagonist.

And something about the "This is a virtual world thing". Sometimes this can make great plots. If you have played the DDS games you probably know what I mean.
it worked for the matrix.

well, it worked for the 1st matrix
it worked TOO well in the matrix. that's why its so overused.
the thing is, there's so ways to create twists in a story, so why do games revert to the same ones over and over? is it simply laziness on the writer's behalf? is it the consumer's fault?
i personally blame religion.
damn them.

I think the whole "it was just a dream" ploy is the worst and the most used ending of RPGs. It's like the writer didn't know how to end the story so he decided that making it a dream would add depth. It doesn't. It does quite the opposite really.

I liked the ending to FFT -

Everyone is killed in one huge explosion and dies...they are never heard of again and no credit is given to them.

Open ended endings... I hate these with a passion RPG or any other kind of media. Its hard not to attribute these discussion forum endings as lazy writing. Give us some [Happy Choice Words Here] closure or don't waste our time (especially frustrating in RPGs because of the usual 40+ hour commitment to finishing one).

Storyline i really hate, is the 'hey that guy who's been helping you every damn step of the way is actually your greatest foe.'

Now writers, would you kindly write something original.

(Kudos to whoever gets the reference.)

Plot-conveniant amnesia, followed by 'your parents are murdered at an early age as a motivational tool'.

I said amnesia but I think they should all die and start with fresh new ideas on starting like and take note here game developers:

HAVE A GAME WITH NO AMNESIA WHO KNOW WHO YOUR ARE! That really pisses me off.

Do not make the bad guys so obvious being in the dark would be nice. Like If you thought you were helping the good side the entire game but then when you learn the other side of the story you decide wiether you wanna continue to be "bad" or "good" depends really on your prespective of the issue.

Virtual world are dumb as hell, only good if it is a traning simulator or some other nooby crap.

And saying its is all a dream is a cowards way out of a good ending that you cannot think of, take the time to think of it.

P.S. Most of these are typical JRPG plot twist, look at Nintendo and you can see this will never change no matter how much you cry about it. ( What Mario number is it now like game 16049?)
