Pretty much always play as a female, though I'll usually play both for the variety, but I have far more female characters than male ones. Most of my favourite characters in games are female. But then again, I'm a feminist. I actually feel more awkward if I play a male character...

I'm male, and almost always play male characters. For some reason Mass Effect is an exception though: I've got multiple Shepards of both genders, but FemShep just feels like the canon one to me. I agree very much with the earlier comment that Jennifer Hale is the better voice actor, so maybe that's got something to do with it.

Woman plays as woman

one. Because it's not often that I get to play as my own gender.

Two. Women are just funnier to customize for me.

In the case of WoW I usually play a female toon, mostly because the Male toons have this odd creepy vibe about them.

I play male characters close to 100% of the time, as a guy IRL. I like to more or less roleplay myself, applying my own morals and values to Shepard and other characters that I play. The only exception is if the game calls for multiple characters to be created, at which point I'll add in some females to prevent a total sausage-fest.

Though, the more Mass Effect I play, the worse male Shepard's voice sounds...

Depends on the art style of the game, sometimes male/female characters just look better in different art styles. The voice actors make a big difference.

I could never play a Paragon Femshep for example, since all her paragon lines are delivered with a hint of boredom that i could never get over.

my first save is generally my "me" save. a character more or less based on me and what i would do.
my secondary saves are for stuff i wouldn't otherwise do.
the only RPGs i've really played for an extended period of time were Fallout 3 (250 hours) and New Vegas (170 hours and counting). i've noticed that women get really useful perks, especially because most of the games' NPCs are male. my secondary saves are generally female because i can get stuff for a lot cheaper, get quest info easier, avoid a lot of fights, and coerce the few woman NPCs with lesbian come-ons.
*creepy laugh*

-EDIT-

i'm a guy, in case you couldn't guess.

Female, always. After, I think the third Guild Wars expansion I started playing female in anything that let me choose. I just find it more fun to play as female, from skyrim(A Female argonian and next play through a female bosmer) To even the RPs here(Sal-Rena nar Hadran in a Mass Effect RP)

I play both, and my rosters are often about 50/50.

Although that can come and bite you in the butt... My prefered race/gender combo in World of Warcraft is female tauren, mostly because they look awesome in heavy plate. But since they're not exactly the big bimbo-combo, quite a few people tend to assume anyone playing one is a lass for realz, which can lead to some awkwardness...

On of the atractions of this is that I do like to break the stereotypes sometime. The mild and kind female warrior with a sixpac like cobblestones, the big, burly male thief and infiltrator, that sort of little breaks from the routine.

I'm a guy that usually plays a male character. However, nothing stops me from playing the occasional female character. Usually, if I play a game multiple times, you'll see 2-3 male characters and 1-2 female characters.

Not sure what I'll do in TOR. Someone recently pointed out to me that it might be kind of awkward to flirt with some of the characters that you get the option to.

Ug this thread everytime I look over the forum window on the escapist I tend to see a rage inducing or irritating thread. They have mostly been about health and fitness but this is a change of pace. Anyways my opinion which is bound to receive flak but which I will state regardless.

I play males outside of playing females for the lulz with other guildmates or friends in mmos and even that's shortlived. My one observation of all the people who do play females is that they fall unto two categories:

The manchildren and beta males

The married and depressed

Are these two absolutes? OF course not their are always outliers and exceptions to the rule but the overwhelming majority that I have met in real life and in video games who play female characters fit unto one of those two categories. I'm all for a strong female protagonist (we have like 3) but in a bad rpg or mmos where there is no character development where we get nothing but a sex goddess to portray your fantasies and desire upon it becomes, I'm going to say problematic for lack of a better word or unwillingness to write up an explanation for that.

Whenever we're given the choice, I always place female. No exceptions. Better to look at, and it usually seems to make the story better.

First time I play a game I play female. Second time I play male, and after that I play either one, but but I'd say I mostly pick female.

Whatever i feel is best. it depends on what character i have in mind at the time honestly. so it varies from game to game.
