I'm not really an intense gamer, I have a 4 year old laptop and a PS2 which I quite like but I have some money burning a hole in my pocket and guitar hero 4 looks pretty promising. My issue is why should I buy a full instrument set for an 'old' technology when I can buy a next-gen console (xbox 360) for about the same price (gotta love christmas specials)

The other things I have been looking at are above, if I don't chose to get a new console, I currently have a 3rd gen Ipod nano 4GB but there's the attraction of the PSP's MP3 capabilities.

I currently have a gameboy advance that I am quietly enjoying when I have nothing better to do, But I am by no means a nintendo fanboy

Your thoughts?

All I will say is, don't get the PSP, I bought one, and I regret it now, its just a PS2/3 with awful graphics and a tiny screen

Id say since your not a hardcore gamer probably go with the music stuff, its fun easy to play (hard to master) and is slightly more social then most other games other than coop types.

Trust me, the screen being as it is you either need a magnifying glass, or get used to scrolling sideways to read text.

As for internet play, kinda pointless as few people even bother these days.

I find it quite bad that you don't have "A decent PC" on that list, because you can get one for $400 if you know where to shop.

I have a PSP and I love it, sure there isn't a lot of games on the console but since your already said your not a hardcore gamer it would take quite a while before you get through all the good ones. The only problem is that you say you already have a PS2 and some of the games on the PSP are just remakes of PS2 games.

And also I don't know if its just me, but I have never heard anyone say "Ohh I will buy a PSP because its plays MP3s", since you already have an MP3 player it would seem silly to me to buy something just because it plays MP3s.

For a handheld it has fantastic graphics. Especially compared to the DS, I'm not being biased, I have both.

I don't know why you say it's just a PS2/3, the PS2 was a good console. Look at it this way, it's basically a handheld PS2, good thing imo.

Also, there are some great games on the PSP, God of War, Loco Roco, Katamari, GTA, Patapon etc.

I dont think you can really accuse the PSP of having a tiny screen seen as it has the largest screen of any current hand held. Considering its a portable the graphics are pretty good, the only thing that lets it down is the same thing that lets down the PS3 a lack of any really good games.

I would personally spend the money on either a decent xbox bundle or maybe a mid range PC, there is a good selection of preowned games for the xbox so getting a nice selection is pretty cheap. With the PC you can get some great games for very little cash, and you can upgrade later if needs be, plus you can run it through a TV so you dont need a monitor

The DS is the best value for money: cheap to buy, huge game library, lots of old games now selling at a discount, very varied selection of games so you don't get burnt out on one genre, like FPS on the Xbox. Its massive sales also guarantee that new games will continue to be released for it for a while yet.

PSP is good on paper but the consensus is that it lacks fun.

Xbox 360, on the other hand, is heaps of fun.

The iPod Nano isn't worth the money if you already have an iPod, and the iPod touch is cool but a bit pricey for what it can do - though Steve Jobs promises it will become a decent games machine, but we'll wait and see.

Guitar Hero is great, but be honest: you won't be playing it for years on end. Try to get a friend to buy it instead. :)

Are these prices from 2005 or something? Nintendo DS is about $100-$130 right now, and XBox360 you can probably swing for about $250. Either platform is outstanding.

Nintendo Wii seems to be pulling a repeat of the GameCube in that there's not that many outstanding games for it with the awesome ones always seeming years away. PS3 is still not quite worth the cost, the PS2 is actually proving more successful than it.

Consequently, I'm left under the belief that only the XBox 360, with its outstanding game selection and reasonable cost, is the true winner of the console wars right now. The Nintendo DS for handheld. In terms of MP3 players, you can get them for a lot cheaper than a PSP's price - get a iPod.

The psp is too big to work as a standalone mp3/4 player and the game selection is, if you're not running illegal homebrew (assuming you're buying new you won't be) shit. The 360 is a risky investment as it has a tendacy to errupt into flames. You're paying way over the odds for a DS, buy online or hell, just send me $100, they're like $99 here.

Avoid guitar hero 4, it's a poor man's rockband 2.

How good is your PC? If it's shoddy I would suggest a PS3, you should be able to pick one up if you hawk a vital organ or two.

Honestly, the DS has an excellent catalogue of games if you're not looking for just a graphical powerhouse and the ability to play Call of Duty on your HDTV. It's probably the strongest library available this generation, and there's a new game worth buying every two weeks, practically..
