Oh, any number of things could fit here. You could name him Mohammed or Saladin. Fidel maybe. A good friend of mine named himself Gustav.

Really, though, any name can be heroic after a hero uses it. John, Mark, Matthew, Jesus, Mohammed, Abraham, etc were probably not very common names of their time before someone with each of those names became immensely popular. Now they are some of the most used names in humanity. So, why be an reference to anything? I don't know any hero in history named Andreas. Name yourself that and, through your heroism, make naming one's kid Andreas as fashionable on Earth as James or Michael is now.

I usually look into mythology.

So think of the names of some mythology you might be familiar with (Aztec, Norse, Greco-Roman, Hindu, etc). For my Male/Good Sheperd I chose Apollo, for my Female/Evil Sheperd I chose Teoya (short for Teoyaomqui, Aztec god of dead warriors. Since the diminutive I use sounds female, I stuck with it).

3. No "joke" names, like Titty Shepard. Who names their kid Titty anyways?
I'll have you know that titties build character. Or at least I assume that lack of titties is my central problem and therefore...

Whaaa? So why ask escapists if you don't want joke names?

Well, I'm clearly not going to be any help then.

Commander Cat Shepard
Commander Testicle Shepard
Commander Smelly Shepard
Commander Uraddek Shepard

Oh all right, if you HAVE to play it straight, Nathan should probably be in your top 20. Its an amazingly old name, so it jibes with both biblical and antiquities.

His (or her) first name does not matter at all beyond what it shows on the save file. So if your sister is also planning on playing, just name him with your name so you can tell your saves apart.

If she isn't, well, have fun with the name hunting. I've got nothing, I just stuck with the default name because again, they never use the first name EVER in the actual game.

This. This guy is awesome.

Seriously though, high five. As for the last part, when I finish downlading the game sometime 'round tomorrow, I'm going to be holding a poll of my favourite names from this discussion. So far, the list looks like thus:

In alphabetical order:

Adrian
Alexander
Arthur
Christopher
Howard
John
Joshua
Lance
Leon
Marcus
Vincent

So far, I'd say I probaly like Alexander Shepard, although the reason I'm holding this in the first place is due to my chronic indecisional disorder, so who knows if that's what his names' gonna be. Keep on sending in those name suggestions guys!
Hey, no sweat, only took 10-15 minutes, hope it helped.

Lance actually would be my pick from your list, my only other 2 cents would be avoid Vincent, Howard or Joshua... or Adrian or Marcus (but this is just my opinion obviously). Leon, Alexander, all the rest of the names are a good fit for Shepard actually (although the list is quite long in itself), I'd try to shortlist it to 5-6 maximum... which you like, (not necessarily after my objections, despite me liking 6 and not 5 of the 11 :]). Bolded/Italicized was me btw.

My sister just got me the Mass Effect Pack off of Steam today, partly because my birthday is coming up soon and partly because YOU CAN CURRENTLY GET THEM BOTH FOR TEN DOLLARS ON STEAM, BUT ONLY TODAY. Squee! Anyways, I have 5 hours to kill and during that time, I need to come up with a good name for my Commander Shepard. Only problem is, I have an extreme case of indecisiveness and I cannot for the life of me decide on a good name for ol' Shep. So I thought: Why not ask the good ol' people on the Escapist?

A couple of rules here:

1. I'm going with a Male Paragon Shepard. That means mean-sounding names like Seth are out.

2. It has to sound heroic. Who would you take more seriously, Ragnar Shepard or Steve Shepard?

3. No "joke" names, like Titty Shepard. Who names their kid Titty anyways?

4. Be creative; don't just post a name just because you named him that or you saw an LP'er use it.

5. Try not to post any spoilers or advice here. The internet has already spoiled half the plot for me; I kinda wanna keep the other half pure.

6. There is no rule number six.

7. Finally, yes, I do plan on getting ME3 once it comes out.

Okay Escapists, get to it! Once the game has finished downloading, I'll let you all know what I've decided on!

EDIT: Rule number 8: As funny as it is, I'm not calling him Commander Commander Shepard

What does it matter? The only time you see it is when you're loading a game or in the Squad screen.

No one ever says you're first name so it's a bit pointless.

My Shepard is Kruxxor Shepard

As far as I remember you only see the first name in one menu... and I didn't even pay attention to it... sooo why are you wasting all this time picking a not-so-significant name when you could be PLAYING MASS EFFECT RIGHT NAO!?

P.S. Go with "Nenad". Dunno where I got that from, but it sounds cool.

Anyone who names their kid "Commander" is either cocky or prophetic...or both.
...probably both.

When I played, I named him Leontes Shepard. My female was named Louise Shepard, and then I named a second MC Liam Shepard.

I dunno why, I just liked the letter L at the time. But the only computer I could play it on crashed recently, and now that I've fixed it I'll need to replay it...assuming I could find both discs.

*Potential spoilers, maybe? I have no idea*

Now see, they already have two names. They're Japanese, so the names are reversed, their first name is Shepard, their second name is Commander. And thats why people they're familiar with call them just Shepard, and people they're not familiar with call them either Commander or Commander Shepard. This can be noted by Legion, who has a feeling of intimacy for Shepard, calling them "Shepard Commander".

Joking aside, something Roman like Marcus or Tertius seems like it'd suit a soldier, if you're wanting something that sounds a little different. "Faustus" would be interesting, based on what happens to them at the start of the game (it means "lucky" according to wikipedia).

"The" and imagine him and everyone he meets referring to him in third person.

Or that he's a Time Lord.

And I thought I was being creative when I named mine "Commander." Damn.
I usually use descriptive names. For a renegade Shepard, I named him "Asshole." Paragon was "Hero." Speedrun playthrough was "Leeroy." Cannon is "Commander."
