Anime manga and videogames are the "media mix" as they are called in japan. They are a single entity and being a fan of either of those is in one capacity or another also to be a fan of the rest.

I was a videogame and an anime fan before I even knew anime was a separate thing from other forms of animation. I liked anime more than other things and anime-like games more than other games by simply perceiving the similarities among those things, without ever knowing that they belong to their own category. This was so from a very young age too.

Come on OP, we're on a gaming website. What did you expect? :p

Chalk another one up as a gamer. I guess I really like the execution that video games offer. I'm not quite sure that some experiences here in game land can be translated to other mediums.

As though they need the positive and lightheartedness to counter act the more negative things in their life they can't deal with. And I happen to be exactly the opposite. Which is why I do not quite identify as a nerd/geek or lover of anime/manga.
theres nothing wrong with light hearted media..if its done well

to be honest though I generally go for "darker" stuff...but not too dark

Does being a music geek qualify?

Out of that list I associate most with video gamers, but my main passion is music. I probably like books as much as I like games, too. Though I guess I'm not as into that "scene" for whatever reason.

None really. I honestly do not think it is a good idea to base a "culture" around the consumption of a product. Say what you want about other cultures throughout history, but all of them have had some kind of unifying ideal or moral. Geek "culture" has none at all. And it is a tremendous error to replace philosophy, morality, or other types of belief with the purchasing of products, and the related discussion of those products.
I would argue that it is quite common for cultures to spring up around consuming products, especially media. Geek culture that is consumer oriented is centered around appreciation of the arts, which is easily as valuable a rally point as philosophy or morality. Geek culture requires no validation through comparison to any other culture, its value is inherent. It inspires not only the appreciation of existing art, but encourages discussion and creation of new art. Like all cultures there are parts of it that will mature over time, but to suggest it is nothing more than base consumerism strikes me as a fallacy.

videogames and reading fantasy. Never could get into anime besides obligatory Cowboy Bebop and tabletop/card games are just not my thing.

I guess but I'm not like one of those "high iq sciency mathy" people

I think I tend to lean towards the "creative" stuff....like drawing an such...and I'm absolutely fascinated by all the stuff underneath story's (tropes, cliches, what makes a good story good or a bad story bad) I never really invested myself into anything "useful"
Don't worry, there's a huge subset of "Geek" still open to you. Comics, for instance, tend to fragrantly violate scientific principals with terrifying glee, but it's still very firmly stuck in the "geeky" section of the hobby shop. Plus, they're all about the creativity.

And if anyone tells you that stories aren't "useful", please punch them for me.

Something between the gamer and the film buff.
Well, I fancy myself a film buff but my repertoire is a little... lacking.
Eh, between films and games, I'm much more into games anyway.

I like creative expression and story telling. So for me, it boils down to whatever form of entertainment I'm currently enjoying.

So...I'm at times into video gaming culture, music culture, film/movie culture, television/small screen culture, and literature culture (sci-fi mostly).

I guess you could make the argument that I'm also a part of the TCG and tabletop cultures, since I've been playing Magic: The Gathering off and on since 1995 and occasionally enjoy either a game of Dungeons and Dragons or the Battletech TTG and TCG, but I'm not really big on the medium as a whole.

I'm quite the video game nerd, but I think I fall better into the category of "literature nerd", and while I'm a movie nerd as well, the only genre which I have truly extensive knowledge of is the horror genre.

Been a gamer all my life. I've always had a PC (even before they were called PC's) and consoles at home. Probably helped a bit that both my parents were techies and early adopters of all things tech. Like the early 'mobile' phones (Read brick sized)

Nowadays, I always make sure to keep my PC top of the line every few years. As far as other nerd media is concerned, it depends. I'm not much of a movie or comic buff, but I do appreciate them when I get around to them every once in a while.

Out of the poll options it's Videogaming (look at me, unique little snowflake that I am). On equal tier to my love of gaming is my love of LEGO. I also really like superhero stuff, but I'm seen as something of a heretic because my involvement with it is entirely via movies, cartoons and games, not the comics they came from.

I major in video gaming, minor in anime/manga.

I have a middling knowledge of movies, and basically 0 knowledge of tabletop/board games.

I see all the time that the term dark and gritty replaces the term of seriousness. Because what I ment to say was that I enjoy works more if they focus on serious and mature story telling. I want something I watch, read or play to take itself seriously. Outside of a minor few exceptions things like anime, manga and japanese games do not.
PIXAR movies are both light hearted yet take themselves seriously

but I actually agree in that I really am not interested in anything "meta" or has a "its so bad/over the top its good" mentality, I like things that takw themselves seriously

the only things to be both parody/meta AND have an engaging story are tarantino films

I dont know if we were talking about anime/manga but the few Ive watched were al lgood..especially perfect blue
