Currently, Bradley Manning is the prime suspect that the Pentagon currently has in a holding cell in the pentagon afghanistan papers leak case. This whole leak fiasco has been in the news for a few days now, and I'm curious, if this man is really the one behind the leak, what would you do with him? I've heard a wide range of opinions all over the net, so I've decided to make a poll.

For recent CNN info: http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/08/01/afghanistan.wikileaks.suspect/index.html?hpt=T1

The options I've posted are based upon what I've already seen. To add to the discussion value, if you could, write a little about why as well.

The Pentagon has him in a holding cell in the Pentagon?

*mind = blown*

I'm not sure I have the whole story straight, so stop me if I'm wrong but:

A guy leaked footage of airstrikes being made on Afghanistan.

Slap him on the wrists and release him.

A gay leaked footage of airstrikes being made on Afghanistan.

Slap him on the wrists and release him.
He's also suspected of leaking 92.000 classified documents released on Wiki-leaks, with a further 15.000 in their possession.

OT: If he's guilty of the Afghan document leak, a moderate jail sentence should probably be laid down. It wasn't anything approaching endangering national security or the war itself, and the public has a massive interest in keeping tabs on the war. Still illegal conduct which should have consequences though.

Might belong in the Religion & Politics forum.

I see.

Well then slap him on the wrists a little harder.

Then release him.

If he leaked files that endanger soldiers in the field and that/those soldier(s) die, he should be held partially responsible.

Regardless, you dont do this to the military you are part of.

Most of the documents seem to be old reports of things which had already happened, and as a public leak it's not like the government doesn't have access to what everyone else knows. I would find it very unlikely that people were ambushed because this leak exposed their campground to the enemy, unbeknown to them.

I hope this doesn't fuel conservative rhetoric about Don't Ask, Don't Tell. >_<;

Then its less of an issue. Had lives been at stake than this would be a big problem. That being said, you dont do this to the military your part of. Unless its exposing genocides or that, its doing nothing but making the group your supposed to be brothers with look bad.

As did I when I saw it.

Now I need to edit it before the mods get to me

The problem wouldn't so much be for the American soldiers (who'se tactics should've been learned by the enemy first-hand by now), but for civilian Afghan informants who could possibly be identified from the reports. Their life expectancy would suffer dramatically.

And agreed on hoping the conservatives aren't trying to twist this into some kind of anti-gay bigotry. While I can't see any remotely logical possible way to do it, that hasn't stopped them before.

His actions will almost certainly result in the deaths of numerous Afghan informants (the Taliban is currently reviewing the documents and will let us know if they find anything by having a public execution). However, he did ask WikiLeaks to do the redacting, which is just asking for trouble given their general incompetence at such things. I'd say a conviction for criminal negligence would probably be appropriate.

Good for him, the people deserve to know what the fuck is going on.

Sure, he should be discharged for "betraying" his military, but he doesn't need to go to prison. I guess that's the price to pay for THE TRUTH.

After catching up on my liberal media post Spring Break, I came across an article which made me want to post here again. It seems relevant now that he's been in custody for over half a year now without trial (finally charged earlier this month) to bring up What is being done with Bradley Manning.

He's obviously been in custody, where he spends 23 hours a day in a cell in which he isn't allowed to exercise. He is forced to sleep naked and also must be inspected naked daily.[footnote]https://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/05/world/05manning.html?_r=1[/footnote] These measures are said to be part of a precaution against self harm, though the decision was made by the warden, not a mental health professional.

This is really just sad and petty. We have him in prison, his picture is known internationally at this point. He's not going anywhere. "We would have to get him up earlier" is seriously their reason for making submit to an inspection completely naked?
