Western RPGs for me. I just don't think of JRPGs as real role-playing experiences. And don't use the "every game let's you play a role" argument on me. In JRPGs, the characters are defined for you. Most western counterparts encourage you to formulate your own character and back story, thus making the game more personal. The stories tend to be a bit more mature and engrossing, the combat less frustrating since many games have embraced real-time over turn-based, and the characters a little more varied.

I'm curious what people think about RPGs based on what region it's created. For me, I like the "freedom" of Western RPGS but I also love the story of most Japanese rpgs (such as final fantasy). I'm not a fan of the Korean rpgs and its emphasis on grinding though. How bout you guys?
Just trying to be helpful; you said "All three", you only gave 2 options.

I like all three, for their distinct qualities. Even though they're all types of RPG, I don't even really think about comparing them, because they offer different experiences. In my experience, the only ones that don't really work are crossovers between the genres, because they alienate people who like a certain type of RPG and don't like it change, and it won't encourage people who don't like features of the other styles.

Western.

I cannot stand Anime, and all JRPG's are developed with the "anime art direction" in mind. I can't stand in any way, shape or form turn based combat; I find it boring. It leaves room for no improvisation and it doesn't feel like you're actually fighting, it feels more like you're just issuing orders and I hate that. I want to be able to feel like I'm actually fighting, not just there to provide directions.
Lol what RPGs have you been playing, you issue orders to at least one person in all RPG games.
Theres also Persona 3 where you only have one character to control.

I would say that I like both Western and Japanese Rpgs equally, but then, I would be lying.

While I had fun with Final Fantasy IV+VI, Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos and The World Ends With You, none of them managed to surpass Planescape: Torment. Baten Kaitos and World Ends With You came pretty close, but alas no cigar. And there are other great Western Rpgs like the Baldur's Gate saga, Mask of the Betrayer, KotOR and Jade Empire (I love Bioware Rpgs). So, I cast my vote for Western Rpgs. Maybe I'll change my mind when I get to play Persona 3+4, but I wouldn't hold my breath for it.

Oh, and since the majority of Korean Rpgs are MMOs, I hate them.
OKKU!!! <3

Good to see someone else who's actually played a NWN2 game.

I'm a Western RPG guy through and through. Planescape: Torment, Baldlur's Gate 1&2, KotOR 1&2, Fallout 3, Neverwinter Nights 1&2, and of course the gorgeous Mass Effect.

Western, I simply get tired of running into unavoidable random encounters every 3-4 minutes in JRPGs. Western RPGS may have random encounters, but at least they are possible to avoid.

PnP RPG's are the best, as having the most freedom. In the video game form, I much prefer WRPGs. JRPGs never have enough customization (read: none) and I generally don't like the stories of said games. WRPGs at least have the customization elements (though I'm severely disappointed in Bioware's newer games in this respect), if not the freedom. And the stories told, for the most part are fairly good.

Western ArrPeeGees are the only ones for me.
JRPG... no... I just can't stand them I've tried a few, not enough to have a real reson to hate them i guess, but no "JRPG" is something that just turns me off.
And for the Korean grindfests... well basicly the same as JRPGs.
My absolute favorite is Bioware. So far I haven't been dissapointed in a singel Bioware game.
As for Bethesda; Morowind was good but Oblivion and Fallout 3... well they have a lot of potential but they have to be modded imo. I never really got in to Oblivion, but Fallout 3 with MartsMutantMod, FOOK and a damage increase mod is very nice... as long as it doesn't crash (wich it does all to frequently) or corrupts my saves (as is the case with around one third of my chars)

Japanese games are too crazy, Koreans too long

The Americans (and brits in terms of Fable) have it right

I'm mostly into western RPGS, but I'm also an absolute sucker for everything turn-based, which naturally leads me to JRPGS as well. Western has story and atmosphere that I just can't say no to, but with the asian ones, it can be about, well whatever, I don't give a damn mostly, Final Fantasy games probably being the only ones where I actually have a chance of getting into it beyond the "combat".

Specifically about Mask of the Betrayer, it was a game that for some reasons like: weird character companions (the bear that is my avatar is one of them), unusual setting, story that didn't involve saving the motherfucking world that reminded of Planescape: Torment. It did have some disadvantages like being short and the spirit eater thing, but other than that I feel it's the strongest Neverwinter Nights title out of all or at least as good as the Hordes of the Underdark.

As far as crazy is concerned, I think you haven't played Planescape: Torment yet...

I play a fair share of RPGs. The best ones I've played are Fallout 3, Final Fantasy 3, and anything in the Pokémon series

I need better categories, please. Rather than using hopelessly vague and historically questionable regional stereotypes, try coming up with a poll that reflects actual gameplay mechanics - with options such as dungeon crawler, action RPG, sandbox, roguelike, linear/story-driven, turn-based, pause-based, realtime and/or whatever combinations which seem appropriate.
