My first FPS was DOOM. I remember it taking 6 floppies to install and after playing I spent the rest of the night scared that a demon was going to eat me in my sleep.. Good times.

the shareware version of Wolfenstein 3D
This exactly. Wolfenstein 3D was/is awesome.
I remember my watching me play and say 'Hey! Don't just shoot people! Only in self defence!' So I had to play and let them shoot me once before I could kill them. Then my dad says 'Wait, are those Nazis?' I said 'Yeah...' And so he says 'Well then just shoot 'em! They are Nazis!'
Awesome times.

Unreal, closely followed by Unreal Tournament : GOTY edition!

I loved those games. I keep meaning to go back now that I've played enough games to not make them embarassingly hard...

Just out of interest, why isn't the rise of the consoles start in the late 90s? I remember getting my N64 for my 5th Christmas in 1998. And even then it was several years old.
I was trying to break the consoles out from the PC titles, and though Goldeneye came out in '97 and was soon followed by others that got it right the genre really blossomed in the '99-'01 or so period. It is a bit of a fudging, I'll admit, and I hope it doesn't make the results skewed.

It still hypnotises me that there are those dual peaks in the chart between the sprite-based PC shooters and the console titles that are almost perfectly matched, and I have never seen them be outside two or three votes of each other since I started the survey. Completely amazing, and completely not what I expected here. (I thought we'd get a "normal curve" centered on the early 3D shooters.)

I was never really an FPS gamer until N64's Goldeneye. Ah, the memories of when James Bond games were actually fun...
most definately mine was the original goldeneye also back when games cost 20 pounds brand new. that was amazingly fun and even though i have a 360 i still went out to get an n64 just to get that one game and i still love it.

That entire Die-Hard trilogy was gold.

Either way, late 90s. GoldenEye, one of the first games to incorporate the zoomable sniper rifle into FPS. 1997 was a great year.
My first FPS.

The first FPS I ever played was some crappy knockoff of Doom from a cereal box. I think it was Chex Quest or something. The first -real- FPS I played was either The World Is Not Enough or Red Faction.

And my favorites? The Halo series, Doom, Half-Life 2, Modern Warfare, and (though I don't really count it as a shooter) Metroid Prime

Never got to play Goldeneye! I'm waiting for it to come out on Virtual Console... Come on, Nintendo, you know you want to.

I didn't have a gaming system until around 2000, and Perfect Dark 64 is a game I play until now, though I may have played GoldenEeye before it.
