I personally think creepy_rabbit is right. it depends on the game but mostly, i'll use the shotgun or a melee weapon anyway.
I pick up anything. I don't care what, if it has ammo and the capability to kill I will normally take it. Sure I would rather have a sniper but I won't go out of my way to get it.
i use the sniper rifle waiting for some guy to turn into rambo and start shooting everybody in the middle of the map
I love most sniper rifles in video-games, but I do love to just get a rocket launcher and blow some enemies to tiny, tiny bits. Very satisfying.
I usually love assault rifles for guns. I use melee when I can, but for some reason the shotgun in Mass Effect was pretty much all I used.
Depends on the game. CoD series - sniper rifle. CSS - M4/AK. Tf2 - Demoman, or Soldier. I generally find overall however, through every FPS I've played, that the sniper I enjoyed using the most. 
I roll only with a bolt action rifle (scoped or without). Failing that I always keep a trusty silenced pistol for defense and a knife for stealth kills.
Sadly I have gotten so used to sniping and stealth that my assault skills have fallen quite a bit behind.

Hum, it usually depends on which game, games like STALKER where rushing with a shotgun means that you're going to get killed or at least slightly mauled asks for a rifle or anything precise and high powered that can be fired from far far away.
On the other hand, games like Half Life 2 feels right when you jump through a window and unload a point-blank double shotgun blast on a combine face.

I know this only applies to one game, but the gravity gun is my hands down favorite.
As for FPS' overall, I'd have to say scoped assault rifles. They may not have the range or power of a sniper, but they still can take down enemies at range and a higher rate of fire means I can hit a target easier than with a sniper.
But if I can't get my hands on either of those, any sort of melee attack is my next choice. Nothing like getting up close and personal.

I've been addicted to shotguns ever since I played Timesplitters: Future Perfect. No matter what game play, the minute I pull out my shotgun people around me die.
Except Unreal Tournament, for some reason I'm better with the Enforcer than any other weapon in the entire game.

I have recently discovered an amazing ability to use grenades, i am a good sniper and stealth pest but last time i was in a CTF match i took out grenades and ran into their base, blew 'em too hell and ran out again.
At one point an ally killed my target and i was left with a grenade about to go off in my hand and a guy came around the corner and i instantly threw it, hitting his head and killing him in seconds... it amazed me.

If there was a larger clip and ammo count for the Colt Python, it would be the only weapon I use in Half-Life.
