I think it's a shame that FireFox almost has this 'following' of ... dare I say it, Fanboys?
I can understand it if you just like a browser and choose to use it over others. But it seems most folks definition of "Others" is quite simply IE, no more no less.
I tend to recommend Opera to just about anyone except my Grandad who is probably just fine on Internet Explorer. The reason (I believe) that Opera is not very well known is because it didn't always used to be free, however... it has always been a cut above the rest. One could argue that FireFox was seen as the "free version" of Opera, insantly appealing to more people. Though if memory recalls Opera came out of its costly shell at around the same time.
The seed had already been planted though, FireFox had marketed itself beautifully and it seems that for every friend who told another friend "Well, Opera does that", it did not matter. I do think FireFox is a wonderful browser, but its main weakness in my eyes, is what all the other users claim to be its strongest strength ever... the Add-Ons.
Add-Ons to me, are just a nightmare. I can certainly see the appeal... but I'm a relatively busy person and I do not want to trawl through the web to find something that should just be built in. I know there are some very cool add-ons for FireFox, but as I say... it's just not for me, and when it gets to the point that a lot of add-ons just come built-in on something like Opera, I'm going to choose Opera every time.
I do use Thunderbird (Mozillas email client) however, and if it wasn't such a hassle for me to get back up and running on Outlook express, I would. This instant. It was recommended to me by a friend, a friend who like so many others... loves FireFox and thinks add-ons are "teh best thingz evar!". I mean it's ridiculous really... the base of the program can do fuck all, I'm honestly surprised it manages to send and receive emails without a shitting add-on.
I wanted to import some emails, needed an addon.
I wanted to export emails, needed another addon
I wanted to import/export directories of emails, needed another addon
I wanted a spell checker, needed another addon
I wanted a signature, needed another addon!
And what's worse... is the signature add-on is completely wrong, I have to manually move it every-fucking-time when replying to an email, as it automatically puts my signature at the bottom of the message i'm replying to, not where it should be!
My my... seem to have gotten a little ranty there. Well that's my general "beef" with FireFox anyways... I do use it to check web compatibility about once a year when I make a new site. I do agree that it is a wonderful browser, BUT... I just wish more people would try Opera, I mean actually TRY it, don't launch it, spend 2 minutes looking at websites and think "meh"... please, I'm begging you, play with it, check out its features... as it has some lovely ones that even FireFox doesn't have Addons for (or that i'm currently aware of)
