Must... not... make... Dr. Who... reference!

If it was a child: Children cry all the time, they do it to get attention, but when they keep crying, when they just can't stop, that is when something is wrong.

I'll go punch myself in the crotch now.

But, if it's a girl my age: Ask them what's wrong and try and help them through it.

I would bring attention to myself cryptically and comfort if it was a stranger. If it was a friend I would just be straight forward and comfort.

null pointer exception! Males don't cry.

Depends on how I feel about that person.
If it's a stranger then I don't care.
If it's a close friend then that's a different story.
She right! Why would i care if i don't know the person? For all i know, it could be a trap. I saw that sometime and it mostly a girl thing.(No offense ladies) Here a example. My friend Kevin broke up with his girlfriend call Tina. She, in desperation, call Kevin's f*ckup friend P-E in tears to help her get him back. Seem fine right?

Thing is that Kevin was planing on wedding the girl. It wasn't going well because he was broke bending on her every whims. A month before the breakup, she was flirting with another guy to who she had a crush on. Out of the blue, she leave Kevin in a the dust. After two week of watching him turn into a zombie, she said she ready to him she will spend a weekend with him to see if they can patch it up. Again, he paid for everything, throwing away 350$ bucks on her. She leave a bit early but he didn't think much of it.... UNTIL HE SAW THAT SHE WROTE A MESSAGE ON FACEBOOK TO THE OTHER GUY TRYING TO PATCH IT UP. (Also her message that said, "don't date anyone and don't forget me" was a dead give aways.) Her message was to the other guy? "YOUR THE MAN OF MY LIFE, DON'T LEAVE ME." He officially call it over. So did the other guy, he had sex with her and that all he wanted. So, who would you root for now?

Because you give boys booze/boobs when he's crying.

Easy answer. Would make for a short thread.
Lol, but a disparaging answer. (Not trying to derail the thread here, but I just want to say this)

This falls into the current social norms that men shouldn't show emotion, and are incapable of feeling any true emotion and are emotionally shallow.
Yes WE ARE. So what, If the shoes fit.

I assume you are a girl.
Men do feel emotions, IMO more so than women.

However what would you prefer? Someone that crumbles beside you in tears or somebody that offers you his shoulder for you to cry on and a firm arm to lift you back on your feet?

*patriotic song*

For reasons stated earlier, it is a man's duty to ensure the happiness of women around him. Empathy, sadness, joy ... these are feelings that get in the way of this goal, therefore we cast them aside. It saddens me to realize that you can only see the hardened shell we have forged when we only hone our skills in order to impress, protect and please our females. But sadly... underneath it all.... we are weak! and this weakness that can only be diminished by the happiness of a woman (refer to earlier post). To ensure this happiness is the reason that men grow strong, harden themselves and gather enough strength to even kill a bear with our bare hands if he needs to, hands that yet, are delicate enough to gently wipe a tear of sadness from your cheek.

And men can be quite shallow, so I contend that the tits/vodka strategy will work.
I have a couple of letters to say to that, in the following order: ROFLMAO!!

Sadly, I've often found that this actually does work. Although my attempts are usually more of the "OMG, what happened?!" variety, rather than "Here, let me get my boobs out while pouring you a vodka".... Like, what?! And I disagree with the theory we should harden up, but I certainly respect your right to hold it. [small]You're still wrong though.[/small]

Blunt, but hilarious. That patriotic song you played also made me tear up *sigh* :D

I used to be one of those girls. I already felt stupid enough to be crying over something I couldn't name (especially in public, there is NOTHING WORSE), the last thing I wanted was for anyone to notice me. Except... Somewhere, I wished that someone did care enough to ask. Even if I almost punched them in the face for it, I still appreciated that they asked.

I'd ignore her unless she look physically hurt. However if she was in the bathroom with 20 friends around her I'd tell her to leave, because some people want to take a piss have to muscle their way though a mob to find the toilet of whiny girls. I've never been to a high school dance where that didn't happen. I may be insensitive but there are better places such as outside or off in the corner.

I don't think you understand. By hardened, I mean conditioned to be able to deal with emotional stress, not to feel nothing at all. Merely to be able to deal with the pain without collapsing into a pile of tears.

My caring nature would be to approach said lady and ask what's wrong. If she had a genuine problem i'd listen and offer advice when needed. But if it looks like she's doing it for show or being the distraction for her musclehead jock boyfriend to come beat up unsuspecting innocents out of boredom then i'm staying far far away from the person.

Yeah, that'd be to settle a 3 year old argument between Silent Lycoris and myself. It's been going on for so long, and we're going in so many circles, that we finally decided it was time to get some outside opinions :S

The argument is predominately: Are you losing more friends by repressing your emotions than you lost by being open about when something was bothering you?

Long story lol
No, you are who you are, the way you deal with pain isn't a factor. It worst, man that are to much emotional are label Homosexual or Emo. Beside AccursedTheory said it, when your male friend feel bad:

Ok, so my guess, when starting this thread, was that guys would fall into one of three categories:

[li]Ignore scary crying girl / run away [/li]
[li]Play the ever-popular knight in shining armor / ask what's wrong, try to help[/li]
[li]Or just try and hit on her (assuming she's hot and not your sister)[/li]

So I'm taking it we all have crappy stories of attempting to comfort strange girls, but what about the ones you know?

I am unintentionally emotionally shallow, but if I saw a girl crying, or anyone crying, I would ask them what was wrong.

Ok, so as per the thread http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.193598-Poll-If-you-cry-youre-weak we've established that it's ok to cry AS LONG AS there's a good reason. "I broke my nail" or "the batteries ran out" are not "good reasons" according to that thread.

So, let's assume that this mysterious girl (your sister, your cousin, your best friend, your girlfriend, that shy girl at school, whoever) has a good reason, and she's crying in front of YOU.

What do you do? Instinctive response, not PC :)
good thread...but it really belongs in the Off-topic section, not the gaming section

Which works for a guy (and I've frequently used it on them.) But for a girl, rules are different. (Or so I'm reading.) My avatar is an actual photo *points to avatar*

Dude, i'm sorry to break it out to you, but Women like Badguys. Hell, ask women everywhere. They'll say: "I love sensible and caring man," but when you see her boyfriend. He will be like this

They are as predictable as man.
