So today on the show Morning Joe on MSNBC, they talked about an article called "I love my children. I hate my life." which had to do with whether having children really made people happier. One of the people on the show mentioned her own children, saying that they are teenagers and basically implying that they are a huge hassle.

This got me thinking, because I love and respect my parents dearly and would never think of acting rebellious, but I do know many people along the spectrum--those who hate their parents and do whatever they can to go against them (some with good reason, some without), those who don't care and do what they want, and those who feel close to their parents as I do. I often wonder which one people consider themselves to be and their reasons for acting in this manner.

So, Escapists, where do you fall, and why?
Any interesting anecdotes?

I would say I'm reasonable. I get on really well with my parents so I never really felt like 'rebelling'.

I'm indifferent. I just want to be left alone so I can do my thing in peace but my parents, my mom in particular, like to get up in my shit and pester me with random crap. I do things my way and I have my own interests and my parents just don't see that. They want shit done their way. No. I do it my way. I do everything I need to do. I get good grades. I don't do drugs. So in return I kindly ask that they fuck off and let me play my god damned playstation.

Its really bad right now because my grandparents are visiting and I LOATHE those people and they are constantly bugging me about shit.

I would consider myself inbetween/indifferent. I don't care and will pretty much do what I want, anyway. But I am a lazy bastard, and being rebellious is kind of a hassle, along well as being a respectful/loving son. Just leave me alone please, kthx.

Recently, I was threatened with being kicked out the house for refusing to cut my hair. What, why? I felt rebellious that day.

I am a teenager. I always try to help my parents, I usually try not to make them upset or sad.
But I think all teenagers are hassles without meaning to. But a parent should not complain about that unless the teenager is a burden on purpose

I don't know whether this applies to yourself, but I know a lot of people with this problem in that their parents think they need to spend every second of every day studying to become something they don't even want to become. They're already straight-A students who want to do well and deserve to have some freedom with what they do in their spare time. Some need a push, but many I know would work hard without the constant interference. It's pretty understandable that they'd become indifferent to their parents after a while.

My parents would say I turned out pretty good. Even though I had my little slip ups. Used to get into arguments with friends. I stole some stuff once, paid the consequences. Most people would call me reserved. Teachers liked me even though I never liked to do homework. I was laid back, but, have been known to be a sarcastic jerk.

I guess I would say I'm an introverted guy. Indifferent, but, not rebellious.

I was good to my parents. Got moody for a bit, but never acted out in any crazy manner except once, which put things into perspective. Other than that, I was an annoying person. I moved out from my parents when I was 15, though, so I quickly grew out of teenagehood, I feel. That, or I never did. Who knows.

I remember when you told me about that! I'm still not quite sure of the logic behind her threat. I mean, your hair barely exists as it is. Waiting a little longer isn't going to turn it into some sort of crazy afro-thing, haha.

After a day of school I like to come home and unwind with playstation or anime. I do all my homework in study halls, because I had fucking four of them this last year, and when I get home I have nothing to do. I did essays and bigger projects at home but really, on most nights I could just come home and dick around. I've never needed to study out of my notes or a textbook much because doing practice problems in my homework for my science and math classes was enough. English never had any assignment other than essays, which I would write when I had them, and I didn't really have a history class (Senior year = no classes).

I did all my college application shit. I filled out all my forms months in advance. Etc. You get the idea. Basically I got shit done. Meanwhile my mom is throwing a ***** fit because YOU'RE NOT GOING TO GET INTO HARVARD WAAAH WAAAH WAAAH!

No shit. I didn't apply to Harvard. Fuck the Ivy Leagues. I don't want to go to any of them so you can't have your bumper sticker mom.

Thank god I'm going to college in around a month and a half. I can't wait to get away from these assholes.

I was always doing my own thing, and my parents never told me not to do stuff (though my mom would express how much she didnt like the music or clothes), so I had a lot of freedom. However, i didn't abuse it, when my mom did ask me to do, or not to to something i obeyed because she already asked so little of me how could i refuse?

Rebellious, but not in the "I'm out all night partying" or "Cops come over to my house every week" rebellious.

There are just quite a few things I will outright refuse to do, cheif among them being my inability to give a rats ass about anything that doesn't involve basic human needs and being able to watch T.V./ go on the computer.

"Now hold on a sec," you might be thinking, "Not giving a rats ass, that would be indifferent, not rebellious wouldn't it?" No, it would not, believe me. I get in fights with my mother every week. If there's something I don't feel like I can be arsed to do, I will not do it.

At the age of 15, really? Impressive.
May I ask why?

Sounds like the definition of a pushy parent. I know way too many of those.
Heh, I wish my senior year would have almost no classes. I'm one of those super-over-achiever types, and having already mostly planned all the classes I'll be talking, they're all AP courses. Fun.

I was a very good kid, because of my brothers and sisters. I just wanted my mom to have one kid that she could point to and say 'That's my child! I am happy I gave birth to him. I am truly proud of him.' Instead of the usual 'Yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaahhhhhh *sigh* can I just pretend that isn't my kid.'
Mind you being the best kid in my family is sorta like being in a beauty contest where the only other competitors are Steve Buscemi, John Waters, The Elephant Man, and a victim of a horrific industrial accident.

I laughed in her face. Who does she think she is? Trying telling me how long my hair is gonna be. Gawd, that entertained me enough to be rebellious. But afterwards, I felt like I wasted too much energy on her. I am that lazy.

I used to be reasonably rebellious teenager, indifferent of a lot of things.

Nowadays, I am no longer a teenager, I'm still somewhere inbetween. Less openly rebellious, though.
