Peanut butter applied straight after the bread is out of the toaster is wonderful. The way it smooths due to the heat is a taste delight. Best with a glass of milk methinks.

How about none of the above (although Bacon is great on everything).

Best thing on toast, Pate'. Obviously. Le nom.

Poached and scrambled eggs are nice.
Not a fan of cheese on toast but recently I'm LOVING cottage cheese on toast.
Beans is nice sometimes too, especially with egg.
Jam is nice when I fancy something sweet.

Pfffft, people can't appreciate what truly is great on toast. Has to be a hot toast, of course, but if it's a hot toast, there's nothing better than steak tartare on toast. [http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-U8hZRg_TfFU/ThkSFx3WG4I/AAAAAAAABEs/y2Wx7wISTMo/s1600/Steak+Tartar-2.jpg]

Now, of course, that's risky food, and if you're not careful with it you can get all kinds of health problems, mind. Not as lethal as fugu fish if done wrong, but definitely not something to be taken without precautions.

So you might opt for something less of a hassle, like butter and/or jam.

Butter on toast all the way, to be applied before toasting, not after like at diners where you put the butter on yourself after it's toasted and it's not very good at all that way.
I do, however, love some jelly/jam on my toast depending on if I want something sweet, and what kind of jelly/jam it is. Preferably something like strawberry or raspberry or any kind of red berry is simply delectable when applied post butter toasting, but the bread must be buttered and toasted first or it kind of ruins the taste I am looking for. Not particulaly fond of apple/grape jelly on my toast though. At least, not in the way I am fond of the aforementioned jelly/jam.

Edit: I just remembered! It was strawberry jam that goes best with buttered toast. That is the best, hands down.

Also, cheese goes quite well with toast too. Cheese is the only time I wouldn't butter my toast, because it would probably be a bit too greasy if I buttered it, then cheese'd it. Colby jack, pepper jack, cheddar, blue, it's all good.

Can't beat some buttered, with smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, squeeze of lemon on top. Posh option I know *fixes monocle* but great as a rare breakfast treat with proper smoked stuff. Had some on Christmas Day, and the smokiness and slight sharpness of the salmon and lemon worked really well, surprisingly.

Where... dafuq... is... BEANS!

But yeah my favourite topping is Heinz Baked Beans with Pork Sausages mixed in with Spicy West Indian Sauce with Grated Cheese on top.

Jelly is good as long as its not cold from the fridge. a nice thin but solid layer of grape can complete any breakfast.

On the other hand, if you're a person who enjoys that thorough warmth in your belly that jelly can sometimes mask, a small layer of melted butter is incredibly heavenly, and is a quick out the door meal.

peanut butter to me is good, but only if youre accompanying with a second slice of jelly, or even better a layer of peanut butter on each piece and even distribution of banana slices on both sides as an energizing early sandwich.

Scrambled eggs with bacon or other salted meat, onions and mushrooms. Sprinkle chives on top if in season.

Although I'm getting a craving for kippers now by reading draken's post. :)

A nicely browned toast makes a lot of nice and good and OK things... superb.

My vote had to go for butter.

It's only topped by some steaming hot bone marrow, a sprinkle of salt and some freshly ground black pepper.

I think vegemite is OK, as it's healthy and it probably makes the subconscious register that plain old piece of toast as some crunchy meat something. Doesn't tingle my fancybuds that 'this way up' right way butter or bone marrow do. Must be the fat.

Vegemite makes me feel... OK and healthy.

Butter and bone marrow make me feel...

Nutella and peanut butter together. Sweet merciful lord, it's like eating Reese's cups for breakfast.
I also like cinnamon+butter, it's a nice and quick alternative to french toast sticks.
