I have some awesome scars from doing things outdoors, and what I think are cool tatts. My wife likes neither, so she's no help.
To the forums, then!
What's cooler?

Not sure what to make of this.
Some well placed scars can look cool, like the notch at the brow bone.

Well-done tattoos can look cool though. The whole Chinese/Japanese kanji tatts thing is really lame, imo though. I usually just like the design ones.

So, I guess tattoos are cooler?

I have a lot of scars, but that's just because I'm a clumsy bastard. Neither scars nor tattoos are cool.

It's much more complicated than that. A tattoo of a scar, tattooed on a scar that you got from a botched tattoo operation.

Scars are only as cool as the story that goes with them.

Tattoos are only cool if they are, well, REALLY cool tattoos.

Most fail in that regard.

Fuck her, tats are cool as fuck.

I dont have any yet, but I will have, once I decide what to get (help me decide Escapists!)

And scars are hardcore, as long as they're not those gay emo self harm ones. My scars are from working with my dad, or from messing about with dangerous stuff when I was a kid. And I'm proud of them, no matter how pussy they seem.

I've got tons of scars what I can't figure out is how many are actual battle scars. Never got into tats we did branding.

Both are massivley uncool, tattoos are for people who think they are tough and want to be tough. Scars arent worthy of being cool since something bad must have happened.

Both are monumentaly uncool, scars are better unless tattoos are for a dead friend or something.

Tattoos just seem like a terrible idea to me. Getting ink injected into your skin? No thanks.

Scars can be pretty badass, but they have to have a badass story to go along with it.

Scars all the way - tattoos are for people who want scars, but aren't man enough to go and get them the real way, so instead they pay some creepy bald guy to scar them with some sissy paint crap.

IT'S NOT CAPS LOCK MONDAY! THAT WAS TWO DAYS AGO!

I think scars are cooler since they tend to carry a story.

"yeah, I got this one falling down a hill and getting stabbed by a tree. Had to pull myself off the branch alone. And this one I got while going four-wheeling. That rock came down real hard on the roof."

What's the story behind a tattoo?

"I sat in a chair while someone jabbed ink into my skin."

Some people get tattoos for powerful events in their lives. I know a guy that got a tattoo for each of his children.

You're right about the scar/story thing. However, I wish I could forget my accident with a certain "saw". I have a reminder on my hand everyday. I also have a deep fear of anything that cuts.

I personally think tattoos...what would you rather have, a scarred up girlfriend or one with a small sexy tattoo?

Tattoos are cool because you chose to go to the effort of getting them. Many scars lose coolness when you find out their circumstances. pub brawl=cool. Getting a weird growth on your neck removed=not so cool.

Scars of the non-medical type show the person was dumb/unlucky enough to get hurt. Tattos are more complex but the kind that cover entire arms show that the person is stupid.

Standing out like that is never good.
Of course not everybody with a scars/tattoos are like this, but it is the impression they give.

So they are ranked the same in "coolness", good for fictional characters, not so much for real people.

Most noticeable (non surgical) scars are not like in TV. They pucker and look weird. When people ask me about my tattoos it's with interest and a pleasant conversation. When it's my scars it's never a fun conversation. Interesting maybe. But I don't usually enjoy it.

"Oh this? That's when I saved someone from getting raped and lost my job because of it. Oh yeah, I have permanent nerve damage too. It's pretty sweet."
