I want to say tatts, but I have to go with scars due to the one on my chin and the 10incher running down my leg and past my ankle.

I'm hoping scars as my recent adventures in hospital have left me with several new ones for the collection and most of them seem to be on my neck for some reason.

It really depends on the circumstances, and ultimately comes down to opinion.

I'm probably biased but I don't really see the aesthetic factor in most scars. There are exceptions but most scars are relatively unsightly.
Considering most traditionally awesome scars like cuts from sword fights, with ninjas or pirates don't exist because pirates now wield guns and ninja encounters are extremely rare bordering non-existent.

Tattoos, while the majority are wastes of ink and look particularly horrible, there are some really nice and meaningful tattoos and body art. I'm not a fan of 'picture' tattoos like faces or skulls, animals, etc. But artwork tattoos like some Tribal tattoos can be really artistic and interesting. It's even better when it compliments the person's body, and what looks like lines at a distance turns out to be a tribal animal like a wolf, tiger, bear, hawk, etc. can be just as interesting.
ie: 'The tiger reminds me to be proud about myself and my activities, and to stay strong and to not let the small things bother me'. Such tattoo's can compliment a person's natural personality, such as them being a confident and proud individual.

In both cases, you really need to have the right body type/shape for either scars or tattoo's to really be regarded as awesome. So while some people age and their body deteriorates, so does the awesome factor of said scar or tattoo. I think people who judge a tattoo badly because it won't still be awesome at 60 are just being shallow. I haven't seen too many overly awesome looking 60 year olds. Tattoos or not.

Each side has positives and negatives;

Scar obtained from fending off wild vicious animal preying on a helpless victim? Pretty awesome.
Scar obtained from c-section? not so awesome.

A good tribal tattoo can make someone look more empowering, and/or stronger.

That butterfly tattoo you picked out of the tattoo parlour folio? eugh!
Most coloured tattoos also look ugly.
Some of the smaller insignificant tribal tattoos also look horrible.

Mind you now they have inks that show up under a blacklight, and are near invisible in sunlight. Pretty popular with the raver types.

As for gaming tattoos, I've seen a few and they look awesome now, bit of nostalgia but I doubt they will be so awesome in 20 years time.
I also have some gigantic scars along my back, which originated as stretch marks. Most comments are along the lines of 'Were you tortured?' because they have the appearance of lashing scars. Not awesome!

In conclusion:
