Tattoos can look cool, but many are just shite.

Scars aren't cool, but the stories behind them generally are.

Well, some people can make tattoos 'work', but when they get old it won't 'work' anymore, scars, on the other hand, aren't a voluntary disfigurement (most of the time at any rate), and therefore people aren't stupid for getting them. I myself have a few scars, none of them have any awesome story to go with it though (one I got when I was a young child and was being a kangaroo and faced-planted the rim of a toilet seat, so now I have a scar in my eyebrow, I also have three little scars from having my appendix removed and one scar from biting through my lip when I was a few years old).

I have a god-awful tattoo on my right arm, a nice heart with my ex-wife's name covered up above it. I was only 18 when I got it and wish I'd got the bastard removed instead of the half-arsed cover up job. It doesn't bother me much and always raises a smile when people see it, forever having to get it out in the pub so I can be mocked!

Chicks dig scars as long as they're not hideously disfiguring and they've got a good story behind them. Had a hernia operation on Friday and I've got a big pad across my belly, I bet it's a right mess underneath, I don't even know how many stitches I've had. It hurts like a son of a *****. I'll tell people I got the scar fighting a shark.

Scars FTW.

Kinda depends where they are. I like tattoos, but a poorly chosen tattoo with bad placement just looks beyond bad on anyone. I guess the same goes with scars though usually you don't get to choose where your scars go.

I say scars are cooler. Although, it really depends on how you got the scar.

If you were fighting off a grizzly bear, and it clawed at your arm and you got a cool scar, that's hardcore.

If you were...uhh, doing something...not cool, and you got a scar. It sucks.

"Oh, this is a burn mark from where I got a spray can emptied onto my arm, this is where my forehead came apart between my glasses and a crash helmet when I hit the kerb when my brakes went out, this is where a scared cat clawed me while I was calming it down, this is where I got knocked off a ledge and landed on the concrete ten feet below on my head before walking it off."
"Oh Chipperz, you're so brave, manly and good with animals, showing a deep, caring side."

"Oh yeah, and this is my tattoo of a chain that goes round my arm. It's... Just kinda there."
"No story?"
"Well, at one point I had enough money to afford it. That would be before I was a student."
"...That's a crap story."
"Which is why I lead with the scars."

I think I've made my point. I'm fucking clumsy :p

Neither one is cool or not, they just are. If you are getting either one done to your body and the sole motivation is because it looks "cool" then I question your long-term judgment.

I think scars are cooler since they tend to carry a story.

"yeah, I got this one falling down a hill and getting stabbed by a tree. Had to pull myself off the branch alone. And this one I got while going four-wheeling. That rock came down real hard on the roof."

What's the story behind a tattoo?

"I sat in a chair while someone jabbed ink into my skin."
Took the words right out of my mouth
I have some interesting scar stories, but no tats (Maybe because I'm 14...) but If I would rather start a conversation with a story (possibly fabricated) about the scar across my chest I got in a swimming accident, or the time my bro whacked me in the face with a bat. Not the heart shaped tattoo that says "Suzy" That I had to endure getting when it turns out she was going to break up with me the next day(This didn't actually happen, but it's a good example.)

Done right, tattoos are a road map of your life experiences. Done wrong and their bro-kanji or bro-tribal art.

Blech.

Scars, godammit! Scars say that you're a badass who's been in a fight, or at the very least, that you're a person who's experienced major pain and has lived on to become stronger from it. Scars are for winners! :D

Both are cool, but it depends. Personally, I love tattoos, especially on guys. I think for girls it is a bit harder to pull of a lot of tattoos- I have seen very few women make a sleeve look classy. But, I am a girl and I have a tattoo that I love and I want more.

And scars are hardcore, as long as they're not those gay emo self harm ones.
As for Wadders comment on self-harm scars... It's not your place to judge another person for your perception of what those scars mean or what happened to bring them to that point. Yes, it was "trendy" to have those for a few years, but not everyone with cutting or burning etc. scars did it or does it for attention or to be cool.
I am well aware of that my good man.

However my comment was dirfected at those who did have self harmed for petty/ nonexistant reasonson other than attention seeking etc.

I know it's not my place to judge, and I'm sorry, but that kinda thing just gets my goat.

Also, as the screen name should imply, I am quite female.
Doh! How silly of me.

Please accept my humble apology, I was proably hungover when typing that.
Oh you are quite forgiven. I've misread names a few times. Beware of the mighty hangover, for it is vicious.

I'm going to go with tat's, cause I plan on getting full sleeves in tribute to various metal artists. First one's for you Dime. One cool scar I've seen, people get SLAYER carved into there arm and cauterise it. It ends up looking really awesome. Slayer is one of the big four Thrash Metal bands, for those who don't know.
