Hunting rifle, it was the only thing I could ever find enough ammo for. And I agree that seeing my guy work the bolt is badassery.
For quick takedowns I used the chinese assault rifle. It ate up ammo when VATS missed a lot of shots, but it's the best all around, not OP, not shit.
And I always kept a missile launcher in my pocket, one run-in with a yao guai unprepared taught me a valuable lesson.
The reason I didn't use lasers was because I was so poor, I repaired them all and sold them.

Having played through the whole game, I still think the most satisfying weapon is the standard slegehammer early on. It just has so much of that "BOOM FUCK YOU" quality. Also, sniper rifles are pretty great. There's nothing like peering through the scope, pulling the trigger, and seeing a raider's head explode two miles away.
But ultimately, my favorite weapons? Paulson's Revolver and the Samurai's Sword. I absolutely hated Mothership Zeta, right up until the very end when I got my hands on those two beauties. They made it all completely worth it.

Big-weapons just because of the Rock-it-launcher, I lol'd so hard when I blew a super-mutants brains out with a teddy-bear.

OT : Just to prove that I'm not just a Grammar Nazi, I like Small Guns and the Infiltrator/Perforator guns from The Pitt. I mean, that scope and silencer on an assault rifle? Yes please!
. But I also love Lincoln's repeater because it makes a sweet sound and it almost always decapitates 
"The Terrible Shotgun" that you gain off of that merchant in the underground raider base. Was excellent.
Thats the best close up weapon.
