Gotta be gameplay, if the controls are cumbersome and progressing in it is difficult not because its hard but because it was made poorly I can't enjoy it. Even if the characters and story and atmosphere and everything is great, if the GAMING aspect is bad, its a bad game. If you can't get that down, make it into a movie or a book and leave the programming to people who know what they are doing.

Otherwise it would be like reading a book where the pages are covered in thorns, might be a good book but after a while you're just gonna say fuck it, I'll read the synopsis on wikipedia.

Depends on the game. Tetris dont really need a big fat story, its just all ABOUT the gameplay. If its bad the game fails. I'd say Full Throttle and Curse of Monkey Island didnt have particulary revolutionary or extremely fun gameplay, but the stories were awesome.

Depends on the game. For non-pure gameplay games the story comes first. If I cant get interested, I wont play it. For pure-gameplay games, the gameplay comes first doh.

Smooth gameplay vs. story is a tough choice. I can honestly settle for mediocre on one for excellent on the other. Really, they are tied to me in that sense. But I can settle for a cheap story with good smooth gameplay way faster than I can settle for cheap gameplay with a really good story.

Reading a excellent novel in l33t would reduce the quality of the story if there was no significant reason to write it in l33t.

EDIT: Pretty much ninja'd by Bon Clay.

Depends on the game I purchased, if it's an FPS I want my multiplayer online features.

If I bought an indie game, i want silky smooth awesome gameplay and a good theme

If I bought a AAA game, then I want most of those

If I bought an RPG or action adventure, I want the interesting diverse story.

Easily the gameplay.

Why? Because games with bang-bang are more fun than movies made to games.
THEY ALL SUCK!

I like a good story. There are many reasons why I play games, but I just really like being able to develop a character, see where they go, and how they influence the world around them and vice versa. But gameplay is also really important to me, although I can make allowances if the game is good in other ways. I find it very frustrating when the gameplay is messed up and unintuitive.

I'd say story. Followed closely by gameplay. I don't want a game with a see-through story, or with shampoo-drinkingly awful controls.

Either the gameplay has to be strong enough to support the story, or the story has to be intriguing enough to urge you on despite the boring or shitty gameplay. But I'll usually stick with a game that has an interesting story longer than one that is amusing to play but with no substance to it, really.

Depends entirely on the genre of the game. If I'm playing a fighting game, the gameplay is paramount. If I'm playing an RPG, it would probably be a tie between gameplay and story.

Honestly, I'd probably say online. Mostly 'cause it adds a whole new layer to pretty much any game.

It honestly depends on the kind of game you're talking about, Pac-Man requires different stuff than Mass Effect.

I would have to say immersion for a general game though.

Speaking generally for any game type, smooth-gameplay is paramount. I love a great story and many of my favourite games are mostly story driven... but a really fun game with an awful story can still be really fun while a great story hampered by bad gameplay or poor coding can be rendered quite literally un-playable.

Ideally you try to cover both those bases I guess. :D
