I always automatically go for the story when asked this question (it's the English major thing) but in reality, gameplay is the most important aspect of a game. A game with a crap story can still be good. However, I think that a game with a crap story cannot be great. But then a game with a great story and terrible gameplay is still terrible.

Interesting story is what I voted for but I'm a believer you can't shelf any of those. In the same vein of games being art they contain a lot of art. Most of my purchases are based on which games have the most artistic merit. Visual, musical, narrative, or otherwise, I favor things that are different.
The reason I didn't vote graphics is because that caries a stigma where it is assumed to mean realism, and I disagree that realism has any correlation on how good graphics are (Folklore > Killzone 2 in my opinion, for example) but also because as I mentioned, there is more then just visual art in gaming.

But despite my heavy influence by art as a game, game play is still a high factor on whether it's enjoyable. See Mirror's Edge for great aesthetic promising concept but being more frustrating then fun later on, but I knew that before I bought it.

Story or gameplay (tho I am a bit of a graphics whore aswell) Depends on the game and my mood I suppose. As said above Tetris doesn?t need a story to be fun.
If the game is trying to have a story tho then a bad story can really turn me off a game. A good story will make me forgive allot of things in a game. If the story is interesting enough ill play a game even if the gameplay is at best bearable. If I think about the games that are most memorable for me it?s those with a good story but the one I replay over and over again are the ones with good gameplay. Gameplay is very important by doesn?t tend to leave a lasting impression on you.
Despite this I still think gameplay is the most important part of a game or atleast of equal importance to story. If I just wanted story there are plenty of books and movies.

Multiplayer/online is the least important to me. I like multiplayer but I don't need every game to have it and I hate it when online multiplayer is just tacked on to game.

personaly im more into character development and story then anything else
How about all of the above? Granted, I don't need "super shiny, cutting edge graphics", but good art direction is key.

Still, a great narrative is absolutely meaningless without smooth, decent gameplay. Likewise, fluid gameplay is useless if there's no story to back it up.

Since I can't really stand a game that has one of those things, but none of the others (save graphics), I can't really vote. :/

Gameplay and story are the two biggest for me. If it handles like crap, I won't enjoy myself and if the story is absolute tripe, I'll still play it, but won't enjoy it as much.

Smooth gameplay. It could be a story about three drunken polygon-based hedgehogs trying to destroy France by driving around in monster trucks for all I care, just give me a competent control scheme with a few well-designed levels.

Depends on the game.

Any RPG = Story

FPS = Gameplay and maaaybe graphics, depending on how good they should be for their time.

Indie = Gameplay. I normally don't mind graphics on an indie game, though they would still be appreciated.

And for all of them, originality. I can't fully appreciate a game if they pulled it out of someone else's arse.

Has to be the gameplay. A game could have the best plot ever conceived by man, but if the gameplay is bad, then no one will want to play it. The best example of gameplay winning overall for me has to be Crackdown 1, the plot was near non-existant but the gameplay was so fun that its boosted the game onto my top 10 list.

You can glitter a game with storyline and style, but a game is nothing if it doesn't have good gameplay.

I love playing with my friends. Not so much online play, but local multiplayer is the highilight of gaming for me. So Multiplayer it is. A game can have a shit campaign story, and average graphics, but as long as its a blast to play with mates then I'm sold. Of course, I must keep my standards in some areas. If the graphics are so bad/outdated that I can barely keep track of whats going on through the dodginess of it all then thats not fun. Nor is clunky gameplay.

Gameplay, all the way. Story is great, but it's a bonus. Games like Doom and Super Mario Bros didn't need a story to carry them, and they certainly didn't have graphics on their side! Online play? Forget it!

Yeah, ok, it's preferable for a game to have all of the options you listed, but people just don't enjoy a game if it doesn't play well.

Smooth gameplay.

I can no longer put up with gameplay I don't like just for the sake of story.

Sorry, Red Dead!

Nice narrative and world, but I'm sick of the general gameplay halfway through Mexico.

Gameplay. If you can't make a functional game, I'm going to have trouble experiencing the story in the first place.
